New Project: SETI Upload/Download Server

Summary: This server was requested by the SETI at Home team to replace 3 ailing servers at SETI at Home (the two download and one upload server). The specs for this server came from Matt and Jeff who asked for these specific components.

Additionally our corporate partner NKOL http://www.nkol.net/ will be building this server for us at a steeply discounted rate so our hats are off to them. NKOL will also be building the Astropulse server with similar discounts.

Specs

1. 3ware 9750-4i4e SATA/SAS 6Gb/s PCIe RAID Adapter

2. Supermicro SuperServer 6026T-6RF+ Barebone System - 2U Rack-mountable Intel 5520 Chipset - Socket B LGA-1366 - 2 x Total Processor - Xeon Support mfg: SYS-6026T-6RF+ 1. QTY: 1 2. COST: $1,765.50 3. TOTAL: $1,765.50

3. INTEL XEON X5675 3.06G 6C/12T 12M 95W 1. QTY: 2 2. COST: $1,590.05 3. TOTAL: $3,180.10

4. Kingston ValueRAM 8GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory Module mfg: KVR1333D3D4R9S/8G 1. QTY: 12 2. COST: $100.65 3. TOTAL: $1,207.80

5. Western Digital 500GB 7200RPM 64MB SATA 6Gb/s RE4 mfg: WD5003ABYX 1. QTY: 4 2. COST: $223.30 3. TOTAL: $893.20

Summary Our new fundraiser is currently available thanks to our webmaster Phil. The total for this fundraiser is $8200 completed. You can donate toward the new download/upload server by visiting, http://www.gpuug.org/catalog/28

Thanks guys.

I, too, would like to thank all of the donors that made this possible! I was stretched a bit thin with the holidays, and was unable to donate, but with tax time coming up, it's looking better for the next fundraiser. Also, hats off to Brad and Phil for really getting this thing organized and off the ground. They've both put in a lot of time for basically free just to make all of this possible.

Thanks for the kind words Blake!

We've purchased the remaining 21 Hard Drives which will completely fill up the donated JBOD RAID system at SETI at Home. I'm assuming the SETI guys will be happy as they can populate the array before placing it in the server rack while getting all of the internal cabling sorted away in one fell swoop.

I'm guessing these drives will arrive next week on Monday or Tuesday depending on the seller.

If you'd like to track the progress of the hard drives, please visit http://www.gpuug.org/purchases. I'll update the aforementioned page with tracking information once I receive it.

"On Fedex vehicle for delivery." Even though I didn't contribute to them, I'm glad to see them delivered.

(This might be the month I donate to something!)

Remaining 21 JBOD drives were delivered yesterday. They're currently waiting to be implemented into the JBOD.

Please donate a few dollars toward the new servers if you have them to spare. Thanks everyone!

This Post cleared up My main question...In about 3 weeks I'll be throwing about $15.00 in the pot as one of my semiannual donations.
@Brad, What you and others are doing is a Great Idea. (And this post saved you a PM or E-mail. ;o) )

Cheers. We're working (well Matt and Phil) are working on a semi-automated system which will auto-greenstar all donations. Currently we have this process set up for the seti-direct donations.

Matt's out of the office for the next month, so more on this once he gets in.

I wonder, is it wise to be collecting donations for both Astropulse/NTPCKR server and Download/Upload server at the same time? Donations are slow and we might end up with two half-financed campains without any finished server to send to seti@home

The upside with parallel campains is that people might want to donate to their pet program but not another. But can people tell the difference with these two servers? Wouldn't it be better to get one server finished before starting on the next?

The idea was to give donors the option to choose where their money goes. If push comes to shove and SETI asks us for X server ASAP, we will accommodate them.

Don't worry, the campaigns will stay open until the needs of SETI are met for whichever specific project. We're currently working on grants which will help us help SETI alongside our donors.

Perhaps you could approach Nvidia and/or AMD about some kind of sponsor deal. GPUUG is exactly the right group to do it.

It gives them something to brag about and they are certainly making money on us crunchers.

Besides what Brad said, let me point out that they waited until the JBOD array was finished before they started the campaign for the upload/download server, even though the guys in the lab had asked for it at least a couple of weeks earlier. The details are earlier in this thread.

SETI gave us a rolling list of requests with priorities. We've been following the priority list as they come in an attempt to get them what they need the soonest. The JBOD was at the very top followed by Jeff's AP server then the new Download/Upload server. Just a FYI to keep you guys informed.
