Message 1168266 - Posted: 5 Nov 2011, 17:17:16 UTC

I keep getting this connection failed message.

A little background:
I was successfully running BOINC for SETI@home and MilkyWay@home since June. Yesterday I got a virus and after 1/2 a day of working and trouble-shooting I got my system virus-free and working (McAfee is my anti-virus tool). My BOINC Manager kept giving me this error so I uninstalled all my BOINC stuff and reinstalled...still no joy :-(

Firewall is set up to allow all BOINC traffic. There are no entries in the Event log.

CPU:
GenuineIntel
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz [Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7]
(8 processors)

OS:
Microsoft Windows 7
Professional x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00)

GPU:
AMD ATI Radeon HD 5x00 series (Redwood) (1024MB) driver: 1.4.1417

Help! Thank you,
Toby

This typically has one of two causes.

1) BOINC.exe is not running. (Check Task Manager to see. Make certain to show processes from all users. If this is the case, we will have to do some diagnostics.

2) BOINC_mgr.exe cannot communicate with BOINC.exe. This is caused by the inability of BOINC.exe to act as a server on port 31416 or BOINC_mgr.exe to call out on port 31416. NOTE that this only has to happen for the local host for local control, or the LAN for control from another computer on the LAN. Typical causes are a firewall setting that blocks BOINC.exe from acting as a server on port 31416 or some other application (typically malware) already using port 31416.

BOINC.exe is does not appear in my Task Manager. I currently have boincmgr.exe and boinctray.exe running.

Message 1168639 - Posted: 6 Nov 2011, 14:28:18 UTC - in response to Message 1168474.

BOINC.EXE is the core client, so if that is not running, that would explain why BOINCMGR.EXE (the graphical BOINC Manager) is unable to connect to a BOINC client.

Now that BOINC.EXE is running, can BOINC Manager connect to a BOINC client? If not, make sure you're in the Advanced View (as opposed to the Simple View), and go to Advanced -> Select Computer. In the Host Name box type "localhost" (without the quotes) and the password field should auto-populate. Click OK. Can it connect to a BOINC Client now?

But you had it running in the command window!

The only way of telling if BOINC.exe is running or not is to look at task manager (if windows - something similar if not windows).

I did look at the task manager and it's not running. I just looked again...not running.

The above post with the output was when I executed BOINC.exe directly from the Windows File Manager (not Task Manager).

OK. Now it is time to go looking for the debug output files.

Open the directory " C:\ProgramData\BOINC" and look for stddaeerr.txt.

There will be one or more sections that start with a row of stars and the version number of BOINC. Find the last one of these in the file. Post the last one of these. We are going to have to have a developer look at it unless you have the skills to install the development environment.

Yes, and while it's running, can BOINC manager connect to it?

And the file JM7 mentioned is called stderrdae.txt ;-)

Posting the text was rather long...kinda rude...so here's the full file you can pull from my box:

It does not appear to. The BOINC.exe executes then stops.

I guess we can try if all else fails but I'd prefer a pro look at it (URL I just posted above). By trade I'm a business intelligence developer/programmer/analyst and though I can build a wicked application in Microsoft Excel using VBA, and stumble through a PHP forum install through LINUX, I don't know if I'm geeky enough for that. But I've donated my body to science, I could do as well with my computer...

If you want to analyze the crash dump by yourself:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/AppDebugWin

You can try if BOINC 6.10.60 (Older version) will work OK
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

(! Don't try 6.13.x)

You can just install over the current.

BilBg, 6.10.60 install is giving me the same issue. I did perform a full uninstall and did reboot my computer after I installed 6.10.60.

I'm gonna put 6.12 back onto my machine.

When you said your firewall is set to allow all BOINC traffic, what parts of BOINC and what ports did you allow?

I was just gonna ask, which port(s) should allow traffic (and direction if applicable)?

The following 'Internet Connections for Programs' are allowed full access:
C:\windows\boinc.scr

BOINCMGR.EXE needs to talk to BOINC.EXE via local (non-internet bound) TCP/IP port 31416.

Also, you said that when you launch BOINC.EXE it doesn't stay running, is it possible that your AV has marked it as a worm or other "potentially unwanted program"?

I turned off the anti-virus AND firewall settings on my system, leaving it wide open, then tried running BOINC manager. Still having the same issue. I even went through the BOINC folder and ran every executable...still nuthin'.

I also added the port to one of the allowed entries. Nothing changed. No warnings are coming up as a virus or other bad thing. Seems as far as my anti-virus app. is concerned there is no issue. And even before this issue both apps. lived happily with each other so I have no reason right now to believe that the anti-virus app. is at issue. Famous last words, eh?

When it connects to localhost what should I see? What will happen?
