in my settings "on multiprocessor systems, use at most x% of the processors"
i have changed this figure to 100% .in the task manager it appears the program is using all 4 cores, exactly what i want.
question :is this the 'optimal' setting for this parameter ? (to take full advantage of the quadcore's power)

also how can i tell if the program is using my gpu to its fullest? its an ATI 5770 o/c,system is setup for f.p.s gaming and is quite fast. i understand boinc cannot use both cpu and gpu at the same time?

No, it doesn't. That option works only with Nvidia cards.
There are no default ATI applications at Seti, only CUDA, thus Nvidia applications. Which is why the ATI preference does not show up.

There are ATI applications that can be used, but they are third party only, through the anonymous platform. Look at http://lunatics.kwsn.net/ for these third party applications.

No, SETI do not have standard application for ATI GPUs
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/apps.php

Programmers which make the Optimized application made several for ATI GPUs but I can't recommend this for a "New member".
(unless you know the computers, BOINC and SETI very well (e.g. can you tell where is the file client_state.xml))

For your general question:
"how can i tell if the (any) program is using my gpu to its fullest?"
use GPU-Z (Sensors tab show GPU load and many other things)
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

you'd need to install the optimized app from the good Lunatics folks. there is an ATI GPU app that will work but you'll need to remember a few things.

Its your responsibility to keep up with updates for 3rd party apps

Optimized apps tend to heat your CPU and GPU. Please pay attention so you don't burn up your gear.

and lastly the Lunatics Installer 0.38 is pretty self explanatory about what to install. Have fun

Both. BOINC has never been updated automatically, only the (stock) project applications.

the optimized apps installer is fairly easy to use. Its just a matter of knowing what your CPU is and what instruction sets it can use. ie SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, sse4.1
