Do not get the 560ti. They're pretty rubbish for crunching due to it throwing errors constantly.

Yes so they seem according to a few threads around here somewhere though your name does pop up in a couple of them. :D

Cheers.

I am planning myself on two GTX 570 (they have 480 cuda cores each). Right now I have two GTX 460se plus a six core AMD cpu and they run excellent. I have a 1200 power supply that I got on ebay for about 60$ and has worked great. The power supply supports SLI so it has all the connector I need.

I see you have 2 560 ti's that seem to be doing pretty well and 560 ti's are in the Top 5 GPUs used. Thats what I was planning on getting for my next builded based on preformance vs. price.

If you don't suggest the 560 ti's, what would be the next best for about the same price per card? I just picked up a 470 to run with an i3, but still plan a new rig based on an X6 in the near future. It seems that more of the AMD chip sets support more than one x16 PCI-E, where the Intel;s like to split it 2 x8 x8. Thanks.

Yes, my 2 little GTX250's have crunched a lot of work units. But they use a
lot of power,
and that's putting it mildly. They run so hot I always had
to run the fans at high speeds and had to under clock them to try and stay
around 125 degrees, or less, Fahrenheit. If they got over 135/F they would
show to have completed a work unit in under a minute. SETI wouldn't show the
unit to be an error, but I know it wasn't right.

My two 450's should be here Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing what they will
do!!! Thanks again for the guidance!!

Where did you find GTX 450s. Looks like Newegg no longer sells them.

Found the GTS 450's on Newegg. They don't look bad, but what about the GTX 460 to run in a pair or even 3?

Its about $40 more, and bumps up to 336 Processor Cores vs 192 Processor Cores.

But your Core Clock drops to 720MHz on the 460 vs the 822MHz on the 450.

What have you guys seen as more important, how many processor cores or Core clock speed?

The GTX 460's are a favorite for many.

A little more $$ than the 450's and use more energy, but do very well for crunching.

They could be found on sale during the summer in the $100 range, which is an excellent buy. There are several different models. Some with 768MB of memory (supposed to o/c better), some with fewer cores.

I have a 1GB 336 core model and it does about 15k-17k worth of RAC depending on work availability and mixture of workunits.

Not sure what the on sale or going price is today.

Lt

edit the 460's, like the 450's only SLI as a pair. Some of our crunchers do USE their pc's for other things besides SETI (What!!?? We gotta put an end to THAT!! LOL), so I mention it just in case you had 3-way SLI or something in mind. BOINC/SETI likes no SLI AFAIK, but multiple cards, up to a point, is not a problem.

In no particular order - shader clock, available memory (if you want to crunch 2, 3 or more workunits at a time) and # of cores.

My 460 is o/c'd to 850/1700/1900 c/s/m and could probably go higher. Some 460's are clocked higher out of the box.

Sorry for any confusion. I went with 2 of these.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121415

I liked them because of the lower power consumption and the lower heat output.

But to be really honest it's because without the rebate, which you NEVER seem
to get, including shipping for the 2 of them. They fell right under my 250.00
dollar budget limit, LOL!!

Now if Ed McMahn were to call me? I think a couple of these would be sweet!!!

@ Lint trap

I also have an E8400 in my current rig. I have a GTX 470 on the way that I may install with the E8400 to see how it does. I ordered it for a new rig I'm building using an i3 as an experiment. From what I've read the i3 should be faster than the E8400.

Still waiting to see were I level off with the E8400/8800 GT setup. Its only been running for a week.

Current ratings of the contacts in Molex style connectors are somewhat dependent on the gauge of wiring used, some of the heat is conducted away by the copper in the wires. The pins are crimped to the wire which is very effective if done correctly, but a poor crimp causes issues for both electrical and heat conductivity.

IOW, if you're going to risk splitting cables it makes sense to use only the best quality hardware and even then check for any signs of overheating.

I love my 560Tis. They are both crunching quite quickly with no issues at all. They are also both overclocked editions from different manufacturers (MSI and EVGA). If you do anything other than crunching (Gaming) you will be better with a 560 Ti than with 2 550s that you have to SLI. Plus then you'll have a slot left for a second one.

There were some downclock locking issues with them when they first came out...I haven't seen that problem since June though.

Still searching eBay for a good deal on a couple 295's. They seem to be the best bang for the buck.

Good luck, they do exist, just not all the time.

Wow, my 450's came in. Installed without a problem. Wow!! Could not be any
happier with them. CONCIDERABLY less heat than the 250's. Shoot I might even
be able to continue crunching in the summer months with these two puppies!!
I want to run them as is for a week or so in case any problems should come
up. Then I want to change it to where they will both run two work unit's at
a time. I looked for the application file I needed to change but had not luck
locating it.

I found this in another thread by Skildude.

The only thing you'll need to do is edit your app_info which will be found
in the setiathome folder under programdata/BOINC/projects/setiathome/ when
you've installed the optimized apps.

what you'll edit is the <count> from 1 to 0.5 to run 2 WU's at a time 0.33 for
3 WU's etc

But I could not find the app_info file.

I am running XP-64 with BOINC version 6.10.60 with app_info.xml; anonymous
platform. Didn't see a version for that but I am pretty sure I downloaded
the most recent one.

If anybody could give me a step by step lesson I would be very grateful!!

Your app_info.xml file will be in projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu.
Which be be found in one of the two locations depending on your OS.
XP & lower:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC
Vista & higher:
C:\ProgramData\BOINC
