The mix of shorties and normal WU is entirely down to what is on the tape, which is down to what the telescope was doing at the time, over which S@H has no control.

Are all these shorties from one tape or a series of consecutive tapes? If so, could the staff jump ahead a couple of weeks or a month and split a few normal tapes, then switch back and forth between the shorties and normals?

Different tapes, and not consecutive either.

Yep, They are great when you can download them faster than you cen process them.

Unfortunately I usually cannot.

Is it possible to have the gaussian search included or implemented in the .vlar tasks?

What would typical run times be then for any such tasks?

Very short answer, No.

Thank you for the answer.

Another technical question: Is there a relationship between power, period and score for a pulse - and power, fit and score for a gaussian in a typical task?

Initially I am thinking that the pulse(s) and the gaussian(s) represent two different types or kinds of elements and are not necessarily part of the same thing.

A task that was paused because I got other tasks have the following to shop up:

Gaussian: power 1.11, fit 0.856, score -12.943 (apparently a running or background gaussian).

While waiting to run, it only shows the best pulse.

Best pulse power 9.40, period 3.2375, score 1.00.

Typically scores better than 0.50 are shown in the graphics, for these pulses power and period would have small values.

And since when, exactly, is it possible to look at the graphics of a task that is not running?

That thing you should really know.

Boinc Manager starts up a task, regardless of whether the task has become or is being set to 'Waiting to run' or being 'Suspended' - as long as the 'Show graphics' button has been clicked in order to get up the graphics before that, the window for that task will stay open until it becomes closed. So it goes with my system, that is.

Not more difficult than that!

I'm afraid, my graphics window closed when I suspended the task at the graphics of which I was looking. [non-SETI of course. optimised SETI apps don't have graphics]

edit: and before you start argueing, if apps are left in memory, the graphics window stays indeed open, but of course doesn't update any more.

In some instances, BOINC Manager in fact chooses to close a window when a task finishes up. It is as though at times it wants to show the user who really is in charge of things.

I've been getting a good mix of 'full flavor' tasks along with the shorties lately. This has allowed a bit of cache filling (up to the current limits), and at least what is in the cache has some meat in it for the GPUs instead of being all shorty variety.

What version of the Boinc Manager are you using?

By the way, who is supposed to be cheating in this forum? Me, you, or someone else? If I told you what I know, you would not believe me at all.

Yes, sir!

I know you want to play with things. Hope you had fun doing these things.

And working hard on this one as well, of course.

Shot in the blind, perhaps?

Anyway, in my Seti@home-MapView I got a couple of blank lines in between.

I make a check at the server, but already know that this typically means a spike count of 30.

In some instances, my own log shows this fact as well. I get a blank line where spike count is listed as 30. In that case, I check my local sah_spike.csv for the numbers being stored there.

Typically those numbers are similar to the average that shows up most of the time in those tasks which run for a longer time on my PC and which I can track by means of both BoincLogX as well as the included graphics (really!).

A couple of times these numbers could also become slightly higher, but definitely there is not that much going on right now.

But if spike count was 30, is it possible that the Arecibo Radio Telescope happened to be scanning that portion of the sky at a slightly wrong moment of time? What if the observation of that portion of the sky had been carried out slightly before or maybe later? Would possibly something more of interest perhaps have been detected in such instances and would that be any different than those numbers that are being produced in those mentioned tasks which are running at a longer time on my PC before finishing up?

Please explain.

Blurf. Seriously - is there an upper (or lower) limit / threshold for the numbers which are being returned by the Seti@home client which should be accepted by us to be of natural origin?

Nature does not need any electronic devices in order to produce or generate radio signals. Radio signals are found to be naturally occurring in space, but they are assumed or concluded to be generally not intelligent in nature.

An extraterrestrial signal would have to be something else. Even the gaussians we see in the Seti@home client are made up of spikes and at least the pulses passing by. They show up in the included graphics as well as the logs when finishing up by having been derived by the algorithms built into the Seti@home client.

What are making up such spikes and pulses? They are radio-generated and comes from natural objects in space ranging from planets and suns (stars) through galaxies and quasars.

An intelligent signal, however should be carrying some type of message or information in it being readable by us.

Listen to the sound from the WOW signal. Is not that sound the result of an endless series of spikes making up that signal? Or perhaps I rather should say pulses?
