Message 1342642 - Posted: 3 Mar 2013, 10:07:18 UTC - in response to Message 1342602.

I have increased my data reservoir up to 3 days and only the desktop is increased. What do I need to do?

It won't make much difference as there is a server side limit of 100WUs per CPU & 100WUs per GPU.

It should make lots of difference, his hosts only have Eight and Fifty-Six tasks in progress respectively, well Below the limit.

I know this has probably already been addressed before, but I can't find it. I have 2 computers running seti. One is an older desktop unit with 2 cpus and a laptop with 4. My older unit always has plenty of data to process while my laptop rarely has enough to get through the day. I have increased my data reservoir up to 3 days and only the desktop is increased. What do I need to do?

Where did you increase the cache settings? In the Computing preferences page on the Setiathome website, or locally on the Computing preferences page in Boinc Manager on each host?
Note: doing it in Boinc Manager overrides the Web preferences, you'll need to Clear them if you want to use the Web preferences again,
you'll be using local preferences if you have the following line on startup in the Event log:

02/03/2013 14:32:05 | | Reading preferences override file

Network Tasks ?

Maintain enough tasks to keep busy for at least
(max 10 days).

IS IT REALLY THIS PARAMETER ?

EDIT : AFTER A TEST, I RECEIVED MORE TASK
IT SEEMS TO BE THIS ...

Yes, But it is also the 'and up to an additional' setting too, for Boinc 7 you should put a very small value in the additional setting if you want more frequent topups
(Boinc 7 will fill to the 1st and 2nd cache values, then wait until the total cache available falls below the 1st setting before asking again)

Gripes: Having to pull My thread back on track and AP's take to long to Download.
Kudos: Letting the thread wander this far due to some really GREAT INFO. ;o)

Message 1345890 - Posted: 12 Mar 2013, 21:33:39 UTC

My question is how do some of the powerhouse computers, such as one with 8 GTX-690 video cards keep busy. Do they get special treatment? I have 2 slow ones and 1 with GTX-480 and 1 with GTX-570. For many weeks now either one or the other of these two have had no WU's. It seems to alternate. Right now one has only GPU WU's and for several days the other had only CPU WU's. At one time my RAC was up to almost 50k but is now just starting to go back up from 18k The 2 slow machines rarely have a problem getting WU's. I've been crunching 13 years but am considering calling it quits.

Have you read the Windows TCP Settings - Follow up - Help with server communication yet?

Cheers.

I don't know that network speed is my problem but I'll give it a try.

It's not a speed problem, it's a congestion problem.

I am just wondering why the download bandwidth seems so narrow. My network should be able to download a 366k work unit in 1 second but it takes days sometimes. If you have answered this question elsewhere I apologize for asking again but I support 12 different projects and it is hard to read all the message boards.
Best Regards,
Mark W. Patton

LOL....
It's not that the download bandwidth is narrow, it's just that it's clobbered all of the time....
Here is the bandwidth usage graph of Seti...
The green is downloads. Getting a piece of it is very difficult sometimes.

You should visit our Number Crunching forum, and in particular the Windows TCP thread for a comms mod that might help your downloading woes.

I tried the TCP mod but it didn't help me at all. My GTX-480 has NO WU's and 12 stuck downloading for hours. The GTX-570 has NO GPU WU's and has a dozen or so stuck in download. OTOH my 2-core laptop has plenty of work as does my old AMD 2-core bare motherboard plugged into a power supply.

Over the last 24-48 hours downloading has been more difficult than at any time previously, even with the fix in place i've had downloads accumulate & project backoffs occur. Generally 30-40min later when i hit retry, everything started to download again by itself. Very, very, very slowly, but it did download.

Gripe: The quoted ones above, and the fact that this condition has, from my perspective, existed for many months and still exists. At speeds as low as 0.8Kbps and lower, downloads take longer than the time to process WUs.

Kudos: The S@H team seems to be aware of the problem and is hopefully actively engaged in fixing it.

Kudos to me first off. I am just about ready to complete 1million work units.
it has taken a long time to complete this. For a long time I did not get any Astropluse downloads until I upgraded my drivers. Now, I get all kinds of Seti downloads and A bunch of Astro pluse downloads. The AP downloads are very slow to download but I can get them within a day. Everything is is o.k. for me at this time with the downloads. Seti is almost instantly. My only gripe is how slow AP is. Comparet to what I read here, I have no gripe at all.
