For the last few months, network routing issues have been interfering with the connectivity of some participants. The actual problem turned out to be a lack of sufficient memory in our router at the PAIX in Palo Alto. Two days ago we increased the memory in that router by a factor of four. This fixed the problem.

We would like to thank Hurricane Electric, Packet Clearing House, and CENIC for their great technical help in diagnosing and fixing this problem.

Just for fun, here is a picture of Eric and myself in front of the PAIX building. They would not allow any photography inside.

Jeff and Eric, thank you both for tackling this task so quickly. Even though I'm a 3 hour drive away from you guys, I was one who suffered with those lousy connectivity issues. Its nice to be able to connect directly, and not go through a proxy. All of you at the lab have done an outstanding job at keeping things rolling, and it is greatly appreciated! Keep up the great work, hope to meet you all at the end of this month, if things go right on my end. :-)

Great job guys!!!

Let's hope there is some extra money at hand after the fall funding ends to replace or add some other needed hardware!!

After a year of crunching my main rig has seen the 25K rac for the first time...
Before now this didn't happen because of the network problems, and the lack of work as a result..

Thanks again from a happy seti (only) cruncher...

Regards,

The problem seems fixed according to the feedback from many users.

I just wonder why this problem didn't show up earlier?

(The problem was too big list/table to hold all the IP addresses of simultaneously connecting hosts, right?
And you never changed the Keep-Alive time for the active connections?
)

Maybe the problem is/was Not too many hosts per se but too many fast/hungry hosts more often asking for work?
(Using a Proxy helped in this situation - if 1000 hosts "wear" the same Proxy (= use the same external IP as seen from the servers/router) only one IP entry needed in the table and not 1000)

According to the Graphs the Max number of Active Users and Active Hosts
was around Feb 2010:

World IPv6 day was 8 June which is near the time the square pulse occurred.

Did they ever figure out why there was suddenly not enough ram in the router? Possibly the release of IPv6 on the internet as the issues started about the same time IIRC.
