I was recently invited to join a team but I'm not clear on what the purpose of teams are in this activity. Is it just for fun ?

Actually yes. It can be good to be a member of a team, based on any number of common/shared situations.

Choose a team because you are actually interested in what they are doing, not just because you got an invite.

I've gotten some invites from some rather strange teams in the past.

Most just want to add your credits to their totals.

You mean the team "We are the Borg. Your credits will be assimilated" doesn't respect me for my mind after all?

Teams are just for fun, but if you are in a group you can band together to have imaginary contests against others.

Also some of the groups sponsor fundraisers and other sorts of things. So there is that aspect as well.
