OK.
Alpha folk testing 4.55
Now using Micro$oft Installer for Win Platform.
Big jump to 8.8M from 2.1M 4.54 Client.
Hope to see Rom's new GUI. Maybe with pause feature...
Cheers! Good Luck.

Seems clunky (Their GUI).

Selecting 'show graphics' didn't work.

What are the advantages of using the MS Installer as opposed to what we had before?

I tried it for 5 minutes.
Uninstalled. Put version 4.54 back in.

Issues (from running for 5 minutes)

Right click doesn't work in the 'boinc manager' software.
There is no 'right click' on a project to get the website, you have to click on stuff in the left blue pane.

Clicking on 'show graphics' did not work for me.

Left pane takes a long time to 'refresh'. Feels like 2 seconds, compared to the fraction of a second that the older boinc gui would take to refresh clicking on a new tab (work tab, projects tab, messages tab).

'Exit' only exits the Boinc manager. Boinc.exe still keeps running, running as a service. Setiathome screensaver still runs.
Previous boinc would exit Boinc and the crunching apps when you select 'exit' from the boinc icon in the taskbar.
'Exit' MEANS exit. It doesn't mean 'remove icon from task manager'.

I feel that this version needs some significant testing to remove the 'clunky' feeling.
Multiple people should start up Performance Monitor (Perfmon.exe) to verify that there are no memory leaks, thread leaks when performing tasks such as:
running benchmarks,
adding projects,
minimizing, maximizing, viewing graphics, running hyperthreaded.

Also, verify that all processes run in 'nice mode' or low/below normal priority.
The rest of my applications shouldnt slow down because I'm running this in the background.

No start menu icon. ie.. start, program files, boinc.. only has icons to my old (and non existent) boinc.exe shortcuts.

On a positive note, Uninstall seems to work.

I also gave it a try and seem's to have a lot of small bugs in the interface.

To add up to the already mentioned below:

- The Progress indicator for the WU's doesn't seem to be updated.
- When you hover with the mouse through the options of the task panel, the whole panel is refreshed instead of only the Quick Tips area.

Keep the good work nevertheless ...

Ok...I installed it on 2 computers. Both working fine. I removed the boinc gui program from the startup folder and just let the service start up as normal. To monitor the 2 computers I use BoincView but had to change the RPC port in boincview from 31416 to 1043 for each client computer. Now everything is working as before and working well.

Things are a long way from release to the public.

We are in the process of releasing intermediate builds while we shore up the feature set for what 4.5x-4.6x will be.

I would prefer the public not mess with these builds until the feature set has stabilized, and we are closer to release. This build was released mostly to see how the new installer worked out. The code hasn’t been written yet to deal with the graphics issues when boinc.exe itself is running as a service.

That’ll show up in a future version.

You didn't uninstall 4.54 before upgrading as you was asked to do by the v4.55-installer. ;)

Now, hopefully the fatal upload-bug is fixed in v4.56 or whatever is the next version...

The installer didnt ask for uninstalling what makes me wondering because i read about it in the cvs.log from Rom Walton.

Not remembering the exact wording, but the v4.55-installer said something about "detecting old BOINC-installation, please uninstall", but didn't itself do any uninstallation.

v4.5x is currently only "work-in-progress", so would expect a couple more releases for ironing out all the problems/missing features before ready for release.

You don't really need to uninstall, but you must make certain that the service is stopped. "net stop BOINC" from a command prompt works well enough. Then after the install is completed "net start BOINC" gets it started again.

The purpose of the uninstall is to remove any shortcuts to the old program, either command client or the gui. The install will then set up shortcuts to the new boinc.exe which is basically an updated command line client. All the functions from the old gui version are provided by the new gui called Boincmanger with the addition of some needed new ones like suspend workunit, abort workunit, suspend project. If you don't do the uninstall first like I didn't, and just assume that it will install cleanly over the top of the old version, then when you click on a desktop shortcut to the boinc_cli.exe and then one for boinc manager, you end up with a v4.55 manager trying to communicate with a v4.54 client, which does not work. After a reboot, fixing the shortcuts, v4.55 was up and running. Was able to get the new SAH from the alpha site, which fixes the graphics preferences bugs.

Edit: I run boinc on a Windows 98 system, which doesn't do services.

V4.55 automatically installs BOINC as service, and starts the service.

I see you have code for several releases and versions of chips, but they are for Linux users. Are there any plans on doing the same for Windows users?
