Hi everybody!
Do you guys have an idea how I can put BOINC client and SETI@Home completely under NVidia GPU instead of the integrated graphics? (Intel HD).
I am on a Lenovo TP420s running Win7 64bit.

Well that's easy! The Intel integrated graphics do not support OpenCL or Microsoft DirectCompute, and SETI@Home does not have an app that supports the Intel integrated graphics for computing.
In fact, the only GPU that SETI@Home officially supports is nVidia. |

Good news!
The problem is that, although I installed the client in non-protected mode and I set it to run on GPU all the time, the NVidia GPU monitor tells me no application is using GPU, hence my question.
Any clues? |

Actually, they plan to do so. All iX type processors use the Intel HD2000 and HD3000 graphics which both will eventually have OpenCL IGP drivers (Source, read between the lines).

What is your project preference for "Use NVIDIA GPU"?
What is your computing preference for "Suspend GPU work while computer is in use?" ?
In BOINC Manager->Advanced view, what's your Activity setting for the GPU?
Which driver version have you installed for this GPU?
Did you let Windows do that installation, or did you get the driver from the nVidia driver site?

The driver version is 285.38 and I got it from NVidia website.

Yes, I'm aware that Intel will eventually have an OpenCL compatible driver and hardware, but I figured that with it not being the case right now, it would be a clearer answer to let the OP know that it isn't using his integrated Intel graphics at this time. |

Eventually I found the solution by chance.
The client automatically downloaded some chunks labeled cuda_fermi and astropulse that apparently make use of the NVidia GPU, while all the others actually don't.
So my conclusion is that only a few tasks are intended for GPU use, not all.
Still I don't know what cuda_fermi and astropulse are.
Any clue?

That was my first thought that you didn't have any tasks marked for your GPU.
Within the project, there are two different types of workunits: SETI@Home Enhanced MultiBeam searching for narrowband signals, and AstroPulse which is looking for broadband pulses. Both have their own science application, but only SETI@Home Enhanced MultiBeam has an application that is compatible with nVidia GPUs (and only for the Windows platform). AstroPulse is CPU only if using stock science applications.
CUDA_Fermi is an updated application that is compatible with nVidia "Fermi" class GPUs, which introduced significant changes in GPGPU computing required an updated app. |
