A recap:
We have the location, but we still don't have the friends, nor a complete description of my function.

And a clue:
My hidden friends have four "names" between them, some of these names are human, some are not.

You've got the function, but not the names.
The product of Sir John is most certainly visible in my picture, but the other two fine gents are not those I was seeking.

Well folks did want one to slow them down, and I'm being a little bit of a pedant to this end.

Well done Chris.
You have succeeded in accuracy, so I think you deserve the crown.

The two engines are an 1812 Boulton & Watt, the oldest beam pumping engine in the world built in 1812 still in its original location and a Simms/Harveys (of Hayle, Cornwall), a mere youngster, built in 1846. Both are still doing what they were built to do way back then, shift water from Wilton Water to the summit of the Kennet and Avon Canal. They do so in one ton gulps, twelve gulps per minute from each engine. They only a few times a year, and it comes under the heading of "great fun" to be around when both engines are running in synch...

Testudo Hermanni or the Hermann's Tortoise (you missed the second "n" but close enough) is correct.

Well done and please take it away John!
