Message 1161891 - Posted: 13 Oct 2011, 15:31:22 UTC

This is my first ever post so I hope I'am getting it right. My query is that when I look at my tasks in Bonic Manager it shows that I have 2 tasks in progress but when I look with My account it shows that I have 6 tasks in progress. the odd thing is that the 4 missing tasks all have the same wingman. Any thoughts?

Is your BOINC manager showing all tasks or only running tasks? (There's a button in the Tasks tab.)

Bonic Manager is showing all tasks

Do you mean the label on the button itself says "Show all tasks"? If so, that's what will happen after you click it.

The other state is "Show active tasks". Again, that's what the display changes to after you click it, which means that at the moment, it would be showing all tasks.

That difference between "what's being displayed now", and "what will happen when I click here", catches out all new users of BOINC for the first few days. Try clicking it a couple of times to see what happens - that particular button is a good safe one to practice on. Welcome to BOINC and these message boards, and don't be afraid to keep asking.

With 'resend lost results' disabled, those may be 'ghosts' - tasks assigned to you by the scheduler, where the scheduler reply got lost on the way, so your system never knew it was supposed to get them.

@Richard

ATM "Resend Lost Tasks" is still turned off, and here ghosts are increasing, now up to 134 or almost 10% of In Progress tasks.

Yes, LadyL posted that while I was looking at Phil's task list, showing that he has four tasks all issued at 7 Oct 2011 | 18:27:58 UTC, and comparing that datestamp with Matt's message announcing the suspension of 'resend lost results'.

But once she'd done that, it didn't seem worth diving back in to repeat the alternative explanation :-)

I wonder if we could prevail on Matt or Jeff to declare 'the smoke has cleared', and turn RLR back on before the weekend?

It would be nice, and it would prevent expiry problems.

The button states "Show active Tasks", but I've tried it both ways and the tasks are not shown in either state. So thats not the problem. I should also have said thaty the 4 missing tasks were apparently all sent on the same day and at the identical time.

One blessing is that ghosts don't count towards the 'tasks in progress' quota limit.

Thanks for your prompt replies. I guess that these ghosts are just another "feature" that we have to live with.

Until the project staff turns on 'resend lost tasks' again, then you'll get those tasks back again,

Problem is.......the longer the project goes without resend lost tasks enabled, the more difficult it will be to do it. All the resends will overwhelm the system.

Problem is.......the longer the project goes without resend lost tasks enabled, the more difficult it will be to do it. All the resends will overwhelm the system.

The main cost of having resend lost tasks enabled is simply that every work request requires a database lookup of all tasks which are supposed to be on the requesting host, and getting what's found to the Scheduler. After that, actually finding some lost tasks to send is better than not finding any; lost tasks just get resent without having to scan what the Feeder has listed. If there aren't any lost tasks the cost of having it enabled is all wasted.

No more than 20 lost tasks are sent for one request, though, it seems to me it would be better to fufill the full request from lost tasks if possible to reduce the number of requests. But perhaps that limit is in BOINC so that the downloads don't get too dominated by resends.

Joe offers a more elegant and complete answer to the problem.

Thanks Joe
