Message 1161698 - Posted: 13 Oct 2011, 0:10:23 UTC

I do not regularly visit these forums, so I do not really know what is going on. I have donated some money thanks to their email and BOINC notice tab. I have not been able to download any new work units for at least several weeks now. In light of that I have added several other projects such as Cosmology@home and LHC@home. Is there some link I have not been able to find that would let me read about what is going on with SETI at home regarding this problem? Thanks and sorry if I am repeating problems others have recently posted about.

The project is NOT offline. Some people are having connection problems, which you can read about here. A possible workaround is discussed here

Hmmm...OK. Pinging those IP addresses just times out. I am not willing to use a proxy. I am also not willing to give a lot of time to this problem as I have so many other things happening. I just hope they fix it soon as I want to support this search. Although I am interested in continuing to donate my CPU time (and the money required to keep my computers up and running 24/7), I cannot spend hours and hours tracking down a solution.

Good luck to the SETI team and to the volunteers in solving this issue, and thank you Gatekeeper for your reply.

The other option is to find some other BOINC project that you think deserves support and add it to the list of projects that you run. BOINC is perfectly happy splitting the CPU time between projects. There is a list in your UI, and also at http://boinc.ssl.berkeley.edu, boincstats.com, www.boincsynergy.com, and many other places.

Yes, thanks, I am currently running LHC@home and cosmology@home but I am really keen on seti@home and I am very disappointed that I can no longer get work units.

Did you see that they (probably) fixed the connection problem?
Take a look again in the 2 links from the Gatekeeper's post (#2)

Yes, I see they added more memory, however I still cannot download any work units. I keep getting "communication deferred" message in BOINC. Nothing I can do that I know of but wait.

"Communication deferred" is normal message (NOT error, NOT warning)
- everybody at all times see "Communication deferred" for 5 minutes in Projects tab after [Update]

This delay is enabled at SETI server-side around year ago to:
- avoid too much load on the scheduling server (it asks BOINC to Not try another automatic connection in the next 5 minutes)
- avoid abuse of the [Update] button

(previously the delay was 1 minute)

Previously, the delay was 10 seconds (plus 10%). ;-)

Message 1165651 - Posted: 27 Oct 2011, 1:10:18 UTC - in response to Message 1164752.

Thank you, BilBg, I understand that "communication deferred" is a normal message which appears depending on how busy the servers are, however I have not been able to get any new work units for at least two months on my main workhorse computer. This is why I have added cosmology@home and LHC@home but my primary interest is in seti@home.

I have just checked my other computer and much to my surprise I see that it does have some new work units for seti@home, so maybe I now have to look into whether I need to delete and re-install BOINC on my main workhorse. I have to now postulate that the problem lies with my main computer and not with any WAN problems.

Thanks to all who responded.

I see that tasks have been downloaded on both machines. Likely your cache was full so your computer had to work some of it down before it could download some SETI@Home workunits.

Yes Seti@home seems to be working fine now. Thanks.
