Well, mediocre at best, power hungry crap at worst...I am somewhat disappointed. |

Well, mediocre at best, power hungry crap at worst...I am somewhat disappointed. The latter I'd say. Even the older generation Phenom IIs are faster (at same clock)! What a huge disappointment. Without ATI, AMD would have been down the drain already ... Petition against 1366x768 glare displays: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_153240404724993 |

Except on supercomputing, They are upgrading the Jaguar supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratories, based on Opteron 6200, and bringing it to a Titan capable of 20 Pflops using also Tesla cards by nVidia. Could be the number 1 in the top500 next list. Tullio |

Its fast if optimized code is in use. With AVX running it beats I7-2600K. But it´s a bad idea using only 4 FPUs for 8 cores. With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |

Desktop bulldozers already released? Can someone provide links as cannot find anywhere here that has them in stock. |

AMD launches FX Series Bulldozer CPUs http://www.fudzilla.com/processors/item/24430-amd-launches-its-fx-series-bulldozer-cpus Brief article with 9 links at the end (Anandtech, etc.) |

20 Pflops mostly bcs of
Putting "AMD" and "FPU" in same sentence sounds like contradiction. Its fast if optimized code is in use. Any tests u have seen or where did u came up with this conclusion? What I see is same lame and slow FPU with legacy code. Having in mind, there are no AVX apps 8 months after having Sandy Bridge around, I can't even imagine when we will see Bulldozer optimized code(and its hypothetic performance gain not even being not known). |

... I can't even imagine when we will see Bulldozer optimized code The Open CL apps should (theoretically) run out of the box using Bulldozer features (AVX, ...). I'll try it once I can get my hands on a Bulldozer CPU. |

Which we can say about Sandy Bridge and its build-in GPU too. My point is - if no numbers, then no conclusions must be made. Rest is for fortunetellers and stargazers. AMD has proven how they can brake their APP SDK with newer versions(I read a lot about Bitcoin, and OpenCL developers are extremely unhappy with each new version. Raimster too, as far as I can see). If it was up to me, I wont count on AMD's "out of the box". So to modify my statement - I can't even far imagine when we can see Bulldozer optimized code, running properly out of the box :) I'll be happy to be proven me being wrong. I'd like extra FPU performance too. What I saw in reviews is least to say, disappointing. I was heavily counting on ability, proclaimed by AMD, that FPU can execute two 128-bit SSE at once, but seeing twice less SSE performance than SB clock per clock, and having in mind not all SSE code can be executed in this way(roughly 25% AFAIK), BD can't reach even SB level of performance with legacy code(the code we actually run, the rest is clouded by the Dark Side). |

I'm wondering if the bulldozer can use the sse4.1 apps for seti. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

AMD launches FX Series Bulldozer CPUs Thanks for the link. Only showing EU atm, still no retailers in the UK listing them. With the FX8150 selling for 229 euros(£201), wondering what our retailers will charge.... |

Based on what I have seen from benchmarks. This products looks like what Intel did moving from the PIII to the P4. The idea(s) behind it are good, but in practice it seems to be an inferior product to the previous generation. From what AMD is going with their video drivers and releasing this product I just think of the movie "The gods must be crazy". As it seems they don't have a clue as to what is going on around them. Well, mediocre at best, power hungry crap at worst...I am somewhat disappointed. WOW! You are "somewhat" disappointed? I am seriously disappointed. Wow! On the bright side, I don't feel too bad about the 1090T Phemon II I just bought. I really thought that AMD was going to have something; why else go to a completely new architecture? Since making the die smaller and removing some FPUs I really (stupidly?) thought that they would have some seriously higher clock speeds and those would more than compensate for any weaknesses in the design. I really did expect this chip to exceed the performance of an i7 if only very marginally. So here's what I'm personally left-with: I don't see a good reason to pay-up, at all, for the extra two "cores" compared to a Phenom 1100T and see an argument that the 1100T is actually the better choice. I don't see a reason to buy the chip over an i5 from a practical perspective, either performance or price. I don't see a reason to prefer the BD to an i7 where price is less important than performance. I don't see a reason to blister the chip with an aggressive overclocking and $200 worth of cooling just to get to the performance level (in some specific circumstances) of a $300 Intel part and giving-up all the i7s performance gains in every other situation. I'm left wondering: "Under what circumstances would I want this CPU?" I'm left, right now at least, thinking... "Umm, none." WOW! What a disappointment. Still, I expect retailers to be able to do pretty-well with them just because the cases will be emblazoned with a bright sticker that says, "World's First 8-Core Desktop CPU!" I have my doubts that AMD will even pick-up significant market share in the $200 CPU category. As many articles have said - If AMD doesn't pull a rabbit out of their hat with the next generation CPUs, or doesn't figure-out how to make ends meet with video/APU/server parts I just don't see them surviving. MANY moons ago I used Intel CPUs exclusively in builds I was doing. I moved to Cyrix (I did say "many moons.") Then, back to Intel, then eventually to AMD for the K6-III+ parts, then back to Intel, then back to AMD to save money. Now it looks like an AMD part is inferior-to, or no better than, the Intel part in the same price range. Wow! Wow! Wow! It doesn't hurt my feelings to go back to Intel CPUs, not at all, but I was hoping AMD would make a race out of it. I'm VERY happy I chose to wait to replace my wife's office's machines. Looks like i5s all-around. I wonder what GPUs I can sneak in there for a little CUDA-crunching... |
