IMO, you needn't be concerned about donations above the targeted amount, volunteers haven't provided even a quarter of the budget in any year yet.
                                                                Joe

Being snarky is not a good way to win people over, when asking for funds. I pointed out two valid concerns, one of which is something that I believe others might have a concern over, not so much myself, and you give attitude in a reply. Not good.

The root question was not addressed, what is the targeted amount of fund raising?

I've never known Joe to be snarky or give attitude. Perhaps you're reading him wrong.

To answer your question, the target amount is to cover as much of the yearly budget as possible.

Likewise, I think Joe was unfortunately, just being factual. Fundraising, at least as publicly seen in these forums, has always fallen far short of any budgeted amount. So, targets have been to get as many people as possible to donate what they can according to their desire and ability.
There have been fund drives with specific goals in mind, such as the purchase of new servers, rather than the general operating fund.

But, to answer krokus' question, $548,200 in fall of 2010 dollars, per Ozz's link.

And thank you for asking. Perhaps one day a deep pockets donor shall see that and say.....'Shucks, that's not too much'.....

Are you kidding me?

" For various reasons, there is no bank account specifically for SETI@Home, so no way to receive funds. "

No sensible person would donate money to any Organization that has no Bank Account.

That reeks of "scam".

A scam??? They are part of a university....THEY have the bank accounts. If you don't want to give, don't give but please don't make an issue where there isn't one.

SETI@Home is NOT an organisation - it's a research project run by faculty members, staff and students of the University of California. As such, it does not have it's own bank account. Donations are paid to the University of California, which DOES have a bank acount. You have the option of specifying where that donation should be used - e.g. SETI@Home.

Be lucky

I would be willing to help out. I have a PayPal account I use to use years ago for Ebaying some old but new computer equipment. Currently not being used.

Also is there any equipment SETI is looking for that people could donate?

I have just donated $140 to Seti via my good friend Uli. There are two people who know why that has been done and I thank them.

The budgeted amount for the current fiscal year is $548,000, so that would be a pretty good target, no?

Earlier in this thread it was mentioned that the goal for the fall fund raising drive is $50k.

How did you even get here? Do some reading up on SETI@home and report back when you have a clue.

I am stunned by the reply made here as Seti@Home is run by Volunteers at UC Berkeley and someone who has been crunching data for Seti@Home to the tune of 64K credit should be looking at what they are actually crunching data for.

I would suggest that if you feel that way that you stop crunching data and/or posting.

I am going to be donating monthly, only a small amount for now as I can only afford it in that way, however, I have just created my team website which has advertising on it and hopefully I should be able to draw in some cash in that way too. The website also has a forum and is now open and if anyone wishes to come along and join in you would be welcome, even if you are not a team member.

Sad to see people thinking like that and sad to lose a possible helper but there is just no need for that type of tone on a message board! I am a board owner and quite an experienced admin/mod and I would have removed that post due to flammable content which could also have led to proceedings against the poster but hey we are all adults here bar that one poster!

I think the Mods here are also pretty experienced at what they do. They fairly accurately guessed that people here would "educate" the poster in question, which of course they did, and he chose to bow out.

Uli also diplomatically popped her head in to let people know that the thread was being monitored. Had it deteriorated, the Mods would have stepped in and dealt with it. It was a minor storm in a teacup, which was defused by not over reacting.
