Hi, please could anyone explain me why BOINC manager turns off my laptop when I close the lid? If BOINC manager is not running and I close the lid, the laptop doesn't turn off, it only happens if the BOINC manager is running. How can I disable this? I searched throught all BOINC settings but nowhere found this option. Thank you for your answers |

What's your setting for "Suspend work while computer is on battery power? " and "Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last" in your computing preferences? If "Yes" and anything other than "---" or zero, then that's what causing your computer to 'go off' when you close the lid. It's probably not off, but hibernating. |

What you mean by "off"? Sleep, hibernate, shutdown? Usually every laptop sleeps if you close the lid. If you changed this setting and laptop continues to run with closed lid and you are on battery and you set (allowed) the computations to run on battery no wonder in the morning you see the laptop "off" (battery 0%) If you are NOT on battery and the computations run with closed lid (bad cooling) the laptop overheats and switches itself OFF to prevent damage to the CPU. Thank you for your advices. So my answers question by question: My setting for "Suspend work while computer is on battery power? " is "Yes" and for "Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last" is "---". By "off" I mean hibernate, sorry I haven't written this more precisely. In Control Panel in Power Options my laptop is set to "do nothing" (I am not sure what exactly is written in english there) if the lid is closed and it is not on battery, it is connected to power supply. And it was running with closed lid many times. I often encode a video during night and the laptop does not hibernate when the lid is closed. But if I close the lid while BOINC and the computations are running, the laptop hibernates within few minutes. So you think it could be caused by bad cooling and overheating? Maybe that's possible, I checked the temperature of CPUs during the computations and it is about 85°C, it is quite a lot, isn't it? So what can I do with this? Set BOINC to use less than 100% of my processors? Or is there any other option? |

you'll need to make sure your ventilation is clear(clean it) and you may need to use a cooler to make sure you get adequate air flow. another option is to use the TThrottle to keep the CPU cycles reduced which will also keep the temperature down In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Some of the airflow for laptops comes down through the keyboard. Closing the lid cuts this off, and may cause the laptop to overheat. Laptop coolers help a great deal by blowing air at the bottom of the laptop. Cleaning the dust bunnies out of the (small and usually barely adequate) fan also helps. BOINC WIKI |

But if I close the lid while BOINC and the computations are running, the laptop hibernates within few minutes. Are you sure it really hibernates? What you see when you open the lid? E.g. does it say "Resuming from hibernate" (and later you see the yesterday's running programs on the Desktop) or you see how Windows starts after shutdown? What happens if you "Snooze" from BOINC Manager systray icon (it will stop the computations for 1 hour) and then close the lid and reopen it after e.g. 20 minutes?
