Lately, anytime I start a new task and then quit the application and come back to it, the task does not start running. The Status bar in the Tasks tab says that it's waiting for GPU memory. I have "Use GPU while computer is running" unchecked in prefs. Only way to get it running again seems to be restarting my Macbook (logging out and then back in doesn't do it). Am running 6.12.35 on a late-2008 Core 2 Duo Macbook with Lion 10.7.1. Any ideas? Thanks!

I think that was a bug that was fixed in a more recent BOINC.

See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=6966 and follow the advice in this post. Post the output here, I'll check on this thread again in about a day.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Dumping the task that was hanging in Activity Monitor got things going again. Following is part of the contents of Event Log after I added the cc_config file and restarted BOINC Manager:

Thanks, but we're waiting for the log of when the task is hanging again with "Waiting for GPU memory". Do not stop the tasks in Activity Monitor or abort them in BOINC. Just let them run. Or do you mean that the last bit of the log showed the "waiting for GPU memory" bit?

Sorry about that. Apparently I wasn't exactly sure what you were asking me to post. This time I started BOINC and waited for it to hang with the "Waiting to run (waiting for GPU memory)" message in the Status column. What follows is the entire contents of the Event Log from when I started BOINC to when it hung.

Thank you, just whenever you have this problem, post the log, then exit & restart BOINC. we wouldn't want you to stay on hold for too long. I've notified the BOINC developers of your problem, sent them the log. Let's hope they figure what's causing it.

I have been informed that a fix for this problem has been around since the middle of September, but that this one wasn't back-ported into the 6.12 range. It's been put on the to do list and will be included in a next 6.12; release date as yet unknown.

I knew I read about that bug on the BOINC forums if I remember correctly, but thought that the fix had made it into the 6.12.x series

Message 1161138 - Posted: 11 Oct 2011, 2:31:21 UTC - in response to Message 1159792.

Would this particular issue be at all related to why it seems to take forever for a finished work unit to upload and for BOINC to get a new work unit? Do I need to go back in and quit the debugging process in order for it to upload (and if so, how?), or is it some other issue? Manually updating the project and retrying the upload have no effect. It's been months since uploading/reporting/getting new work unit has worked consistently or reliably. If the network issue is unrelated to the Waiting for GPU Memory issue, just let me know, and I'll post it to a different thread. Thanks!

A fix is available in BOINC 6.12.41. See change log.
You can get 6.12.41 from here.

Great. I went to 6.12.43 as I could find that one on you link as what looked like the latest. Now all my work units go to waiting on GPU within a minute. I use to only have two Work units with the issue. Bummer. I think I will try and back rev myself.

I moved back to 6.12.41 as indicated above. I still had the issue with waiting on GPU. Looking in the log I had a lot of "if this happens alot, you may have to reset the project" notations. I did that (bummer), and so far I haven't had any problems with the new work units I got assigned. So a little bump in the road, but I seem to be better for now.

Here is one solution for a Windows system (hoping this will help you on your Macs)

Possible Solution:
Upgrade your video drivers (2/9/2012 295.73 drivers working for me)

System involved:
64bit Windows 7
Quadro FX2800M (1024MB) Nvidia driver 188.43
BOINC 6.12.34

Details:
Upgrading to the 6.12.41 client did not resolve the issue, however I noticed the video drivers on this system were antiquated. Reinstalling to the latest 2/9/2012 drivers worked.
