Problem No 1: I've just downloaded Boinc again onto my most recent (this) computer after having moved house/countries. Nothing is being downloaded however. The message on the screen is to the effect that Boinc is suspended when computer is NOT in use. I've checked Preferences. Can't find anything there to put matters right. Don't really understand them. Problem no. 2 is that I need to update my profile but am being refused permission because of some rating or credit? being less than 1.0 I don't understand that either. Thanks. |

Hello, And welcome back. For problem Number 1. Go to Boinc manger and where you see a tab called Prefernces, click it. Then you will see a line that says computing preferences, click that. the second line down should be suspend work while computer is in use, That should be no. If it isnt you have to edit that. If you have a GPU, Edit that to no also. For problem number 2. You have to have Rac to change your profile and post on the main boards. You need work to get Rac and that has been hard to get for everyone. Hope this helps. [/quote] Old James |

There's indeed a preference Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last --- minutes Needed to enter low-power mode on some computersin your online Computing preferences. Perhaps it's not mirrored in the local preferences. However, if you want your BOINC client to run independently of the preferences, select "Run always" from the Activity menu in BOINC manager's advanced view. Gruß, Gundolf |

Hello, And welcome back. A Recent Average Credit of 1 should not be that hard to get after a week or two of crunching. For #1, you answered the wrong question. There are two settings that suspend work based on keyboard and mouse activity. You pointed at one, he was having trouble with the other one. BOINC WIKI |

Perhaps it's not mirrored in the local preferences. I just checked. It isn't in the local UI, it has to be set on a project web site. BOINC WIKI |

Thank you and also everybody for your help in this. I've now set my computing preferences as suggested. All I have to do now is find out where my Boinc Manager is! Ann |

All I have to do now is find out where my Boinc Manager is! If you want help with that, tell us. :-) For starters, try the program files directory or the Autostart folder in your Start menu directory. BTW, your only downloaded task expires today (5 Oct 2011 | 11:33:49 UTC). Gruß, Gundolf |

Or, if it has started already, it'll be in the system tray next to the clock. Just click on the little arrow you see there and look for an icon that looks like this: , then double-click on it to open BOINC Manager. |

Thanks for the further info. I did successfully set my preferences and Boinc started working away on my laptop. The noise was terrific, like a ship's engine room and my laptop became very very hot. Then the screen went blank or rather black. I had to reboot my computer. Therefore, I have disabled Boinc until I have the time to investigate. I'm running on Windows 7 64 bit and I've an Asus Intel Quad Core i7 bought May 2010. Ann |

Don't run BOINC without some Temperature Monitoring Programs: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=59292 http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=62044 Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |
