Well, the title pretty much sums up my question, but I'll elaborate a little here...

Out of curiosity I looked for Tibet as an option in the drop-down window when choosing my country of origin. It, in a small way, surprised me that Tibet was not an option. Albeit, China says Tibet is now a part of the motherland and all that, but because the Tibetan Government is in exile and the matter is thus in ongoing dispute, does that mean the rest of the world should take China's word for it because they invaded Tibet and planted their own flag there?

I'll concede the point here that the United States Government does not recognize Tibet's sovereignty.

In the interest of general chatter amongst fellow crunchers, what do you all think?

Cheers,

- Samten

China set out to ruthlessly destroy everything of Tibetan culture. The Tibetan people are being badly overrun and left as an impoverished underclass.

More recently, China is as sensitive and restrictive as ever. However, they are now trying to exploit small pockets of what is left of some small parts of "Tibetan" for tourism just like some curio in a museum.

Tibet is completely invaded. The question is whether politics can moderate the rampage at all, before there is nothing left of Tibet.

Then also, China is on an industrial rampage that threatens the rest of The Earth!

So much for a few of my thoughts...

After reviewing my post I realize that my communication leaves room for unintentional harm. I do not mean to say that the Seti Project should recognize Tibet as an independent nation. I am but a cruncher - one of many. I have nothing to do with what the Project does/decides. Forgive me if any of my comments came off as "They should do this or that", that was not my intent, and I apologize in advance to whomever my original post may possibly offend. My curiosity simply gave birth to the desire to pose the question to my fellow crunchers as to their opinions on Tibet as an independent nation, and *not* whether the Seti Project should or should not recognize it as such.

That being said, ML1 (Martin): I agree that China is very sensitive on the subject of the Tibet issue. So much so, that the attempts of President Obama to address the issue has caused tension is some respects to China/US relations. China did not like that President Obama met with His Holiness the Dalai Lama at all, and took it as foreigners getting involved with the internal affairs of China itself.

I caution the bashing of China, however, as a whole. China has produced many great things for people all around the world. I mean, how many items in any of our homes have a "made in China" stamp on the bottom if it, for instance?

But to eradicate and entire culture of its heritage by attempting to squash its very nature (that of its religion as a main point and thus the practicing of such), is, in my humble opinion, a very unfortunate thing to have happen to any group of people.

I understand the approach of wanting to modernize Tibet, but to do something like that by force and take away their independence seems like a very harsh way of going about it.

Just my thoughts. Any other opinions out there? :)

Seti@Home is initiated and dominated with americans. But today americans owe to china close to 2 trillion dollars. In the last decade all those proud american media almost stopped of broadcasting about chinese ethnic clensing of tibetans and shinjan-uighurs.

In the last 2 years chinese army did terrbile mass killing of uighurs in Shinjian / Xingian area but no any proud freedom claiming western media talked about it. Because today EU government is begging money from china just like how american government practiced in the past 10 years.

So for money maybe most westerners are ready to trade their soul. Well at least at government level and at propaganda machine level it is proven truth.

If western hemisphere truly that self proclaiming leading civilization what ever democracy practitioner etc things they must not cooperate with modern day mass ethnic clenser plus human rights violator. That is the ground condition. But the reality is majorly turning the other way.

Today all of us use chinese made something everyday then on the other side 90% of all chinese rivers or clean water sources badly polluted there which results more than 1 million cancer deaths annually over there. All resulted with "cheap labor invention".

I don't think that we should see China as Reds under the bed quite just yet, but their inexorable advance is becoming at least to me, a tad worrying.

Comment

Phew!

Indeed “outrageous and disgraceful”.

So the Chinese are actually 'legislating' to proscribe what the Chinese want for the Tibetan culture and beliefs!

I rather like the response from the Dalai Lama. The Chinese attempt to legislate to audaciously try to control 'reincarnation'. Meanwhile, the Dalai Lama notes that he is free to emanate his good spirit.

Which religion will the Chinese try to rewrite next?!

Perhaps the Chinese authorities have no concept of hearts and minds?

All very sad and unnecessary on many levels.

All our only world?

It's the same old thing. One country kicking out another. It's been going on since Man plagued this planet. Not all Man of course. I don't think Tibet declared war on any other country or did any kicking out. Unless Tibet can kick China out it's going to have to rely on appealing to the world.

The sad about Tibet, is that this situation will be maintained for a very long time. China is now one of the fast growing economies in the world, Europe and US are dependent on their cheap labour.

In one word, governments of the US and Europe are greater defenders of the human rights, but when it comes to China they just smile and close their eyes and smile to the constant violations that are occurring everyday there.

Tibet is the same, they all receive the Dalai Lama and smile to him and agree about the human rights violations that are occurring in Tibet, but on the other hand they just don’t take an official position against china, because Tibet is not interesting either economically or strategically to Europe or the US.

At the end is just the common hypocrisy of diplomacy.

Dr Imaginario: I disagree with the assumption that the US in not getting involved because Tibet has nothing to offer (China has found many natural resources that they are now in the process of exploiting from the mountains of Tibet). Human rights violations are enough for the US to get involved, it's the sheer fact of taking a stand against China that muddles any thoughts about doing the right thing.

With the notable exceptions of the BBC in the UK and to a lesser degree NPR in the US, most media comment is the West is not state sponsored. There have been issues in the past establishing the veracity of news from communist nations, and unfortunately China's well known internet monitoring continues to hamper the free flow of information. Having said that, the July 2009 Ürümqi riots and some of the events that transpired later in that year were covered by media in the West (e.g. this article in the New York Times).
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...
