In 1973, Sept 11, Nixon and Kissinger brought death to 30,000 Chileans after they both agreed that the recent election didn't go the way that best suited US needs and wants.

I believe the Chileans have the first and the strongest claim to be outraged and angered as they remember their own 9/11.

Or maybe the Ukranians......or Japanese or Quebecois.....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_Canadian_internment

The Ukrainian Canadian internment was part of the confinement of "enemy aliens" in Canada during and for two years after the end of the First World War, lasting from 1914 to 1920, under the terms of the War Measures Act that would be used again, in the Second World War, against Japanese Canadians; and in 1970, against some Québécois (during the "October Crisis").

About 4,000 Ukrainian men and some women and children of Austro-Hungarian citizenship were kept in twenty-four internment camps and related work sites – also known, at the time, as concentration camps.[1] Many were released in 1916 to help with the mounting labour shortage. Another 80,000 were registered as "enemy aliens" and obliged to regularly report to the police. Those interned had whatever little wealth they owned confiscated and were forced to work for the profit of their gaolers. They were interned not because of anything they had done but only because of who they were – where they had come from.

The Canadian prime minister, Stephen Harper, was yesterday scheduled to apologise for one of the darkest episodes in the country's history: the inhumane treatment of native Americans spanning two centuries.

The Canadian government issued a general apology in 1998 but Harper's apology yesterday will be aimed at 150,000 students, many of whom were forcibly taken from their homes as part of a strategy aimed at destroying their culture and enforcing assimilation. Some were put in residential schools where mistreatment included sexual abuse.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_North_America

There are notable records of slavery in Canada from the 17th century. More than half of all Canadian slaves were aboriginal,[citation needed] and the United Empire Loyalists brought their slaves with them after leaving what became the United States. In 1793 the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe, passed the Act Against Slavery making it illegal to bring slaves into the colony, and mandating the gradual emancipation of all slaves in Upper Canada.[7] In 1834 slavery was outlawed in Canada. While most of the emancipated slaves of African descent were sent to settle Freetown in Sierra Leone, those who remained primarily lived in segregated communities such as Africville outside Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Starting in 1858, Chinese "coolies" were brought to Canada to work in the mines and on the Canadian Pacific Railway. These new immigrants were denied the rights of citizenship, including the right to vote, and in the 1880s, "head taxes" were implemented to curtail immigration from China. In 1907 a riot in Vancouver targeted Chinese and Japanese-owned businesses. In 1923 the federal government passed the Chinese Immigration Act, commonly known as the Exclusion Act, prohibiting further Chinese immigration except under "special circumstances". Japanese Canadians were also subject to anti-Asian racism, particularly during World War II when many Canadians of Japanese heritage — even those who were born in Canada — were forcibly moved to internment camps. The Canadian government officially apologised and made restitution for the treatment of Japanese Canadians in 1988.[8] The Exclusion Act was repealed in 1947, the same year in which the right to vote was extended to Chinese Canadians. In 1967 all racial restrictions on immigration to Canada were repealed, and Canada adopted the current points based system.

Throughout the years, many high profile cases of racism against Black Canadians have occurred in Nova Scotia giving it the title of "The Mississippi of the North".[9][10] The province in Atlantic Canada continues to battle racism with an annual march to end racism against people of African descent.[11][12]

I was unaware of the Ukranian internments, thank you for suggesting further reading on my part.

The Japanese internments and the Chinese virtual slave labour are well known to most Canadians.
Lesser known is the African slavery issue that once was permitted in Canada.

We can all learn from our own pasts and the past that is Canada's does not meld well with the present day script stating our position in the world.

We can't fix all of the problems in the world, or even in our own country, with a single post.
The point of mine was to suggest that 9/11 is not exclusive to America. Hell, America's 9/11 isn't even the worst 9/11 in history.

The Chileans not only suffered the deaths of 30,000 loved ones but they also had their democratically elected government overthrown by an unhappy giant.
How many Americans were tortured and imprisoned by the government after 9/11?

I still feel the Chileans suffered as a people much more on that date.

I fight them because they are fascists.

I have to give credit for the twisted brilliance of the 9/11 execution(in more ways than one). However, I still consider it sub-human to use civilians AS weapons. Beneath contempt. Below pond slime.

On a par with Reagans drugs for guns for hostages program.

The Coup in Chile, and the rise of Augusto Pinochet to power was a dreadful event. Even today Chileans remember those years of brutal dictatorship that was sponsored by the US government in that time, all in the name of the fight against communism.

Nevertheless the attack to the twin towers 10 years ago, was also horrible and the use of civilians as targets is something horrible.

All forms of extremism are horrible, all wars in the name of a political ideal are horrible, all forms of oppression, torture and elimination of civilians just because they have a different opinion is beyond any justification.

Man had killed in the name of the noblest causes and also over less nobles also. At the end is all about power and terror.

Power is the most powerful drug and like any other it corrupts not only your body and soul. Like Maquiavel wrote in is master piece the prince “... Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely...”

To summarize since the first civilizations and the appearance of the main religions that exist today in the world, Mankind almost didn’t learned anything with the errors of the past.

However I still have hope that little by little mankind will learn to be better and more fair to each other, and as per the words of Christ that people will love each other and they love themselves.

There is always room for improve our actions, as this is the largest room in our house.

I will finish with a roman proverb. «Errare humanum est, perseverare diabolicum»

I may be naive regarding this matter but two things have been overlooked here. One is that the coup initiated by Pinochet would have happened regardless of who was the sitting President of the USA and none of the killing of 30,000 Chilians was at the hands of American operatives or under their direction.

What about the hundreds of thousands of innocents killed in Laos and Cambodia by the communist governments there?

Maybe the US government should go in and remove the leaders in North Korea if inaction can be deemed a crime.

I was pointing out that no government I can think of
or have read about has a pristine record on the treatment of minorities,
its opponents or even its own citizens.

Thats our job as citizens of these countries to speak out (if we can)
and make sure our own governments do as little of this as possible.
The human races record to this point does not inspire confidence of
our future.

None of these things are justifiable......the US has done a very
poor job of often supporting the "wrong" side in South America and
then trying to clean up the mess later.

The US bashing does get old.......

And hey I like "pesky" Canadians.......they are kinda like that odd
uncle everyone has :).

There is another surprising fact is Americans or US Army has killed more than 6 million Vietnamese citizens during 60s-70s but "official American" statement is surprisingly low, and in the last war in the past 10 years US Army killed more than 1 million Afgany and Iraq women and children but "official American" statement is lower than 100 000.

So my wondering is North Korean propaganda media the worst or the US (ABC+NBC+CNN+CBS+FOX) propaganda machine is the worst on this planet?!

I would say where you are getting your "facts" is probably the worst.

I would agree the official U.S. numbers are inaccurate. In many ways they simply "have no official estimate". But take it ALL with a large grain of salt.

This is not new. The Inquisition killed either a few thousand or 9 million. The truth is most likely somewhere in between.

The truely effective ICBM is American Propaganda Machine not the physical ICBM itself.

First you start out with statements that are obviously slanted by what you have read, of other questionable source..

And then you recite a couple of things that are true, embarassing, and well known within the united states. So we are not lacking facts, we have access to other news sources outside of the control of the United States. Do you?

Sorry, but the broad brush to paint all USA news sources as "propoganda" is inaccurate at best. We get slants from several directions, and it can be difficult to find the truth usually somewhere in between, but the information is out there, and we see it and form our own opinions. As is human nature, most are drawn to opinions close to their own.

I think the US military would be way too proud of those kinds of statistics to try to hide them. The USA is so bad and horrible that we have to put up walls to keep people out and put strict limits on immigration. I know the government of my country is not perfect nor are it's citizens. But I can't think of anywhere else I would rather have spent my life. I was free enough to succeed or fail without any guidance from big brother.

Somehow it seems grossly inappropriate to be slamming the US in its time of pain and remembering.

Sure, we might have caused some of it to other nations, but healing starts with forgiving and moving on.

Rubbing salt in a wound during a time of pain seems to only reinforce bad sentiments and angst.

Is this really what we need right now in the world?

So the rest of the world should be quiet because 9/11 happens to be a day of pain and remembering for the US? Really? Should Chile should pick another day to mourn its losses because 9/11 is now ours?

As for the pots and kettles thing, I hope that the fact of US involvement to whatever degree in Pinochet's revolution was not the primary purpose of Robert's OP, more that there's more to remember on 9/11 than events in New York City, DC and Pennsylvania.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...
