During my readings i found a small article where the bottom line is that the EU is investigating the possibility of creating a TAX on fast food.
The purpose of this tax is to promote a healthy diet and as a consequence reduce expenses in several National health Systems.
In my opinion, I don’t think that Fast food should be treated the same as Tobacco or alcohol, as in this last two, usually the increase of taxation does not reduce the consumption.
What next? All Burgers and fries must have an add saying that it might provoke heart disease? Or maybe we should put a label on pork chops, saying Eating PIG can kill you.
Sometimes i wonder what this guys are doing in the EU, I think they need to find a real Job.

Doc, The tax levy is just an excuse to permit EU member countries to raise more revenue making it easier for them to meet their EU membership subscriptions (for the wont of a better word). The day the ECM rolls over and dies the better it will be for all.

I think even microwave food can be considered as fast food. :D
Better than to tax, I think the parents should be educated in how to provide healty food to their kids.
I know is hard, but like everything education starts at home not at school.

It's being applied purely to increase a countries tax revenue. The ECM looks for any excuse to raise tax's. But if this was a genuine concern regarding people health in relation to eating fast foods then the whole of the tax take would be invested in all ECM countries health services. Lets see if this actually happens, well I tell you....it will not!...and why not? Because this is not a health tax but purely a wealth tax. If you can afford to buy this type food then you can afford to pay an extra tax. It will eventually be applied to your favorite currys
next for there's plenty of unhealthy ingredients in that. Next will be fried fast foods like fish and chips to be followed then by an extra tax applied to cooking oils. How about sugar, salt, preserves, pre-cooked fast foods from the super markets deep freeze cabinets. How soon before your tax'd on your Sunday roast and lets no forget sweets like chocolate etc. Sausages, bacon, black pudding all unhealthy if you eat them too often.

So Doc yes, promote healthy eating via good education...hmm?...can't derive a tax from this. So as I say again " As soon as the ECM collapses the better for us all"

Virtually any purchase is taxed.
While working on my Bachelor's degree, I worked in a retail store. A small amount of food was sold there. I can't remember for sure, but I think it was just stuff like bread and sugar free gum that was not taxed. And that was a little over 20 years ago.

I can’t deny that there is a problem of obesity among young people. Most of the children are becoming overweighed, and the mainly reason for that is unhealthy food habits.
Taxing fast food, or taxing what is considered unhealthy food is nonsense, as is only one way for the government to get additional income.
Our society made all this fast food very appealing to our senses, and even if in reality it’s nothing special, when you look at it in a picture it looks yummie….
Society and the government need to fight child obesity, but this has to be done through education, at home, at school.
Governments spend stupid amounts of money to promote the most stupid things, why don’t cut there and use this money on this issue.
Is sad to see young kids already with 80, 90 and 100Kgs of weight, when they became adults they will suffer from a lot of diseases related with the overweight, who is to blame? Not the fast food chains, that is for sure. Is easy to give fast food at home to your kids, as you arrive late from work, you don’t feel or you don’t know how to cook, so you follow the easy road.
As a parent, I know that I can’t prevent my kids from eating burgers, pizzas and all this kind of crap, but I can give them a healthy dinner at home and provide them with good food habbits.

It isn't just young people. I'm actually thinner than both my parents, and I'm considered obese according to the BMI. In fact, I see a lot of overweight people of all ages, from 6-60. Don't see too many overweight 80 year olds though.

Personally, I think it is more to do with the lack of mental & physical activities.

Growing up, television wasn't quite up to speed with mass production, so as kids, we made our own activity. Went to parks, visited muesums, school visits etc. All involved using either our body or brain.

While in the transport industry, seen many drivers just sit in their cabs while letting others do the work, all the while eating nothing but junk food.

Fairly recently had to visit several customers as their computers were playing up..the computer area was a total mess with crisps bags, wrappers from various other foodstuffs lying around. Several of the problems were just basic issues, but they didn't want to know the working of the hardware or the software..they just wanted to surf the net, IM & games.

According to one of the mothers, he spends up to 14 hours or more a day on the computer, or the PS3 or on his mobile.

In that particular case, the parents are to blame for giving him those toys....
