No power loss yet in NYC, so my rig is still crunching away... Who is with me?

Rain just started here in Nova Scotia, Canada. Supposed to get the worst of it Sunday evening.

I'm in New Hampshire. Crunching till power runs out. UPS system will shut down 5 minutes after power outage, so that would be about 10-15 shorties worth after power failure....

Crunching is fine..however, make sure your safety comes first.

Crunching here just north of Boston (and on the coast). My DirecTV is out, but my internet is still working for the moment! Will crunch until the UPSs start complaining, then will have to pause.

Wouldn't the socially responsible thing to do during an event like Irene be to shut down and save the power grid in your community a little stress for a few hours? Pretend it is a wu-shortage at Berkeley if you like. I know it may be small, but every little bit helps. (God help me, I sound like a socialist!)

I was prepared for a direct hit down here in SC. Had 7200 watts of generator power on standby in the garage. Did some math and found that I could keep central A/C running, two refrigerators, ceiling fans, and just about every light in the house running.. as long as there was gasoline run it all. Was going to shut the rigs down for that.. but I wouldn't have to.

How long would a five gallon tank last about 8 hrs?

I figure if the power is still on we should use it, you know, to make sure the power companies don't go broke...

Yeah, right, Most people in the USA wouldn't know a Socialist if they bumped into one as they walked down the sidewalk.

We know what a Socialist is, we have one in the White House.

*edit* and to stay on topic: my ups bit the dust a while ago and I haven't replaced it yet, so I'm crunching without a safety net. When the weather picks up I have to shut my system down.

Not entirely sure. Haven't actually had to use that generator for more than an hour before (after about 2 hours of the power being out, I pull it out and plug UPSes and fridges in, and the power always comes back on 5 minutes after I do that).

The tank is more than 5 gallons though. Looks like either 8 or 10. About all I do with it is pull it out of the shed every 3 months or so and put some gas in it, run it for about 30 minutes, close the fuel shut-off valve and let it die, then drain the tank. That ethanol crap destroys carburetors when it sits.

I don't have one but my parents did it was hooked up to the power box and powered the whole house it auto come on and off for all the storms we had. It had carb problems also I would go over there on weekends and work on it usually seafoam did the trick. That was about 20 years ago they have been dead for a lot of years now.

Lost power for 14 hours, but not sure that really mattered since my cache is now empty and no results ready to send :-P Luckily, there are 1000+ waiting for validation and a happy GPUGRID project using my rig. Hope everyone was safe...

One bad storm in 93 I lost power for 3 weeks and my shed blew away and my home had a lot of wind damage.

It rained a little, it blew a little, the power flickered once or twice and that was it. We've had worse storms in the winter that could be classed as hurricanes.

That sounds like the the start of a good country music song :)

I just got my power back up here in New Hampshire after a 15 hour outage. Not too bad considering. I too have seen a heck of a lot worse. This storm resulted in just a lot of small tree branches on the ground to clean up and a little bit of water damage to the driveway. Anyway, the 'puter is back up and crunching now. That's what's important, right?
