Bad news there was a protest in the American Capital of Washington over the construction of an oil pipe line from Alberta down to Texas; now we have to sell our oil to the Chinese, and they want to pay us more than the world price for the stuff. They also want to subsidise the cost of a pipe line to the west coast as well. Don’t people know that we love Americans; I think you would look hard to find a Canadian who would rather get more money from those pesky Chinese than leave our poor American cousins out in the cold, or is that out in the heat. I say you people should be writing to Rush Limbaugh before this all gets out of hand. |

... now we have to sell our oil to the Chinese, ... I think you would look hard to find a Canadian who ... Well, that speaks volumes about the Canadians... Dealings with the Devil come to mind?... First it was seal pups' fur. Now it is the biggest toxic opencast tar pit the world will ever know... Note from a parallel thread: Yet more scientists put themselves on the line ... the equivalent of lighting a fuse to the biggest carbon bomb on the planet. Stupid?... ... now we have to sell our oil ... Also note: "... Here in the north of Alberta the sky is so clear that the stars hardly even twinkle. There are no big city lights to mess up my view of the heavens. ..." Just wait until one of the oil 'improvers' processors moves your way?... They also want to subsidise the cost of a pipe line to the west coast as well. Actually, there was just a "small" worry about the route of that pipeline. Its planned route runs directly over the Ogallala Aquifer which is a vast yet shallow underground water table aquifer located beneath the Great Plains. We all know just how we can trust the oil industry to protect against spills. If this pipeline were to rupture the contamination of the Ogallala Aquifer would be a disaster since many states draw their drinking water and crop irrigation water from this source. |

Dealings with the Devil come to mind?... Well now, we all have our own Devils now don't we, and who that is can be open to question. The point I could make is, just who controls the oil companies, I don't. tar pit Well it really looks like brown compact dirt. The thing is you people want the oil, you just don't like the way you get it. Less people die getting the oil out of the ground, than the number who get killed getting coal. I would stack up the oil sands against some of the open pit coal mines I have seen images of. |

Ogallala Aquifer I did not know that. Is that the same place they are using fracking to get shale gas? ,. |

Please don't tell anyone, but if I could, I would vote for a good old Candu Reactor any day. |

humans are doing lots of stupid things to get more oil. Unfortunately with the oil industry, experience is that big spills at some time or other are pretty much guaranteed. Yet we have no good way to effectively clean up the mess. And yet the present operations policy for pipelines appears to be to operate them until they corrode to failure, and then to just patch up the holes for as long as it is the bad-PR that doesn't become too much of a mess... The environment and any local wildlife and people be damned. It seems to always take some big disaster for things to be fixed (or covered over) after the event and after all the mess. We seem to 'conveniently' ignore even the most obvious scenarios if a preventative fix is seen to be merely too inconvenient... Is that any way to run an industry? Is that any way to run an industry? They [we] do the same thing with anything that is in a pipe. |
