Successfully downloaded 71 workunits just now. Saw a cache of a few hundred thousand available so decided to give it a try.

It seems to be working again, I'm processing units again and that hasn't happened for a week or more.

Bummed, just set this up on a nifty big nice server sitting on a 1GB pipe in a colo and no work to do. is there a way to test this to make sure I am not doing anything wrong? (says error no work available to process)

No, there's no work available from SETI just at the moment - they lost their local raw data storage last week, and it's taking time to retrieve the data from off-site backing store.

For test purposes, why not try another BOINC project? Einstein@Home usually has a reliable supply of tasks - they have a large initial data download requirement, but that will give your GB pipe a test, too.

In addition to no downloads I am experiencing a steadily growing stack of results "Pending" or "Completed, waiting for validation". Its playing hell with the work averages

Same here. All my new work has pretty much come to a halt. I've burned through almost all my extra WUs. The last few results I have trickling back to SETI are from older, slower machines. But most of those are also having the issue where uploads aren't working...

Why the silence? I think some comment or update from the administrators is over due. If they would post something like, "We need a XXXX and it will cost $NNNN and we don't have any money" you never know what response they might get.

Folks most of the help treads are in Number crunching forum please post in that forum. The tech news forums are for staff updates on the project. They don't answer questions on problems very often here that happens in the number crunching forum on this same message board. As to why posts have been fewer from staff is the staff person that normally posts them is going on a long vacation/ Rock band tour of europe and the eastern USA. The rest of the staff has almost no forum presence and does not post here very often. I expect to see 2-3 posts while Matt is on vacation from staff. Also most of the project staff is part time on this project and they are doing thing like write funding requests to funding agencies at this time. I think most funding agencies have a twice a year deadlines for putting in requests for money one in the spring one in the fall for most of them. I think their time is better spent writing those than posting on the forums right now.

So the impression left is simply that seti is down, no one is doing anything and nothing will change. I doubt that is quite accurate but that's the impression. For all we know, no one is working on it and that's that.

Yup, that's it. It's over. ET's been found, and we will never be told about if for security reasons. We might as well shut down BOINC, because we will never again see any work units, and move further discussions to where they belong:

IN THE NUMBER CRUNCHING SUB FORUM.

I see, so the Technical forum is the wrong place to ask questions about a technical problem.

Makes perfect sense...

A look at the number crunching board doesn't show any threads related to seti being down.

Try this one as a starter:

Its always near the top of the list, and the "version" gets incremented periodically.

For what it's worth. I'm downloading work units, and I'm having no problems downloading. Uploaded one workunit already and no problem doing that either. So, all I can say is, it's working for ME. Don't know about anyone else though. I'm thinking that they might have fixed something.

Thanks for the update.

Edit: FWIW, mine just started uploading after more than a week.

Yes, indeed! Since it's the Technical News forum and not the technical questions forum.

YAY! Uploading! WOO-HOO! Just wanted to say I don't know what you guys did this morning but it worked! Haven't been able to connect to SETI since Aug 22, today booted up after getting home and uploaded and reported 192 WU's all at once pretty much.

So thanks for all your hard work on the tech side trying to fix these router problems. And if you're still not sure how to solve it, use whatever you did today as a clue.

A lot seem to be impatient. Just relax. They're doing the best they can with what they have. There isn't a team of like 200 people that work on keeping this project alive. So things take time and often times big things break. Regardless of time. SETI@home has ALWAYS fixed their issues one way or another. I doubt these guys would waste most of their time on this if they didn't care or simply just didn't want to fix it. Sometimes they need parts. Other times it's a deeper issue. Whatever the reason, be patient. I am sure there are a lot of other things you can do in the meantime.

I have been uploading and reporting whatever WUs I managed to download for about a solid 5-6 days, and that's NOT including the weekly downtime. As of this posting it seems that hings are finally working again for the most part. Still a few disabled servers, but there are a couple hundred workunits to be crunched so lets get a move on :P

That's because there are a lot of old timer users who know when things are bad, they know where to look and what to do. It's not that people don't care, it's just what they are used to. If you have enough credits, feel free to start a thread yourself regarding downtime.

Know you are not alone on this. Like you, I have been on this project since practically the beginning and have contributed more WUs than over 98% of participants. Poor communications to project participants has been my number one gripe.

I have suggested this before, but apparently it is too much to ask to post a brief status note on the home page when there is a problem and to update it every few days as there is progress solving the problem. In the name of morale, if nothing else, I feel it would be worth spending <5 minutes to post an update. I don't agree with the argument used previously that it would be five wasted minutes taken away from solving the problem. It would not be wasted time.
