The point is that the various images of that store burning down, have been adopted by the press as iconic symbols of the riots. Therefore this particular case is very much in the public eye. Whatever sentence he gets 50& of people will say it was too much, and the other 50% will say it's not enough.

Useful to the debate?
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

He got 11 -1/2 years, which is maybe more than most people were expecting.

I think most people were expecting about 7 or 8 years. With this sentence he'll probably be out in 8 years on parole or licence with good behaviour. If he had been given 8 years he may have been out in 5 years.

It is really difficult for people not from South London, to fully appreciate how people felt about the burning down of the Reeves store. I've lived within 10 miles of Croydon in various places, for over 65 years, and I can still remember cycling around Reeves Corner aged 8 or 9.

To see it burn down like that was truly heartbreaking for everybody, and even worse for the family owners. Whatever sentence he got it won't bring it back. OK, a building can be physically replaced, but it won't be the same.

It's simply a lose/lose situation for everybody.

Even with remission for good behavious this 42 year old rioter/arsonist will not see his children grow up and punish the family as well.

The sentence waas appropriate for the crime.
It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues

Someone will have to pay for the damage and the cost of keeping the rioters so that has to come from the people some how.what a waste of resources that could have help many people in there own area.no winners and nothing gained by there actions

HM Prison Service is a Dept of the Ministry of Justice headed by Ken Clarke, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice. As a Government Ministry it is ultimately funded by the tax payer. After the riots in the UK last summer, the public quite rightly demanded that those responsible be apprehended and brought to justice, with appropriate custodial sentences, which is what is happening.

In the case of the criminal damage caused, insurance policies will pay for most of it, but of course some policies don't cover damage resulting from riots or civil commotion, in those cases the only redress is to attempt to recover the costs from the miscreants, which I doubt would be forthcoming.

I'm not clear if you mean by waste of resources, the cost of imprisoning the offenders. If so, If so how else would you punish the wrongdoers? I doubt community service would give the right deterrent message.

There are definitely no winners from the events last summer, everyone would agree with that.

Johnson will spend just over seven months in prison. This is because she will serve half her sentence before being released on licence, minus 144 days for time spent on a curfew.

She has been tagged for the last 5 months, and with expected good behavior, will be let out on licence after serving 1/2 the sentence, and being on licence is actually quite restrictive. It may seem a light sentence, but she was more of an accessory to the fact, not one of the burglars herself. With her background she could have had a privileged life and a secure future, she now has a criminal record and will be an ex-prisoner. Not exactly useful for a CV, or ones marriage prospects.

The message is quite clear. Not even a monied or privileged background is going to get you out of being prosecuted if you broke the law. Actually a prison sentence is the least of their worries, it's the fact that it will stay with them for the rest of their lives. I know someone who was given 18 months for assault, serving 12 of them, 20 years ago when they were a teenager. To this day they still find it difficult to get any meaningful work, and that will always be the case. Most people don't want to employ ex cons - fact. That's the real price they are paying for their misdemeanors, not the original time in prison.

Sirius -- that was from three years ago -- he's gone even more whacko (MS and ID probably love the man (see other threads for their rants).

I should know, I *live* in Maricopa county -- proud to say, I've voted against him EVERY time. Sad to say, Maricopa county seriously looks like some of the deep south or something similar.

One problem with whacko Joe -- while he has focused on his foolishness, his office has ignored hundreds of sexual abuse cases that fall under the responsibility of his office. Turns out that wife beating, sex with minors, and child abuse apparently don't bother him.

He is much more focused on checking the papers of every hispanic looking person he runs across.

The thing is, he's not 'law and order' -- he is political pandering. And he is Very good at that.

Heavy Sentences for 14

"Francis, who shook his head and looked tearful as his sentence was read out, received the longest term of 14 years in jail after being convicted by a jury of riot, arson with intent to endanger life and attempting to pervert the course of justice"...

A decent sized penal sentence passed for once, just hope the courts keep this up.
