Grant it I'm not really running BOINC because of overheating issues during processing but I do have the client run for post notifications etc. Any way, I came accross somethin in the event log after startup that I was hoping someone might explain. 7/29/2011 11:48:13 PM | | Starting BOINC client version 6.12.26 for windows_intelx86 Note the bit in red, whats the deal with that becaue while I might not be able to run any tasks right now I do have some DL that are taking up disk space. What are the values for: Disk: use at most X GB Disk: leave free at least Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored Y GB Disk: use at most Z% of total In your prefeerences? |

What are the values for: Answers in red... Edit: Would the 0.00 be a reflection of low available disk space ? If so that might be the reason the log shows 0.00 since I only have available 3.11GB's of disk space. |

Yes, your low disk free is what's causing this. Increase the "Disk: use at most Z% of total" to 100% and you should be able to get work again. |

I'm not worried about work right now because I can't run BOINC before my CPU overheats and shuts down. Laptops kind of old, probably need to replace a cooling fan or something. In any case, I have work DL, outdated mind you. I was just curious about the 0.00 figure given my chosen settings but then a while ago made the edit an was like hmm, that might be why. Any way, ty for the assistance :-) I just wish I has some RAC or soemthing so I could post on the other boards. Edit: For arguments sake, even if it were at 100% wouldnt the below figures interfere with it, namely the leave free 5GB one ? Disk: use at most X GB (50GB) Disk: leave free at least (5GB |

In either event, it seems anything like BOINC or really intensive video streaming heats the CPU to the point of instant shutdown to protect the system. Even with my A/C blowing somewhat accross it (not on purposes jsut good loc) it still heats to the point of shutdown. For arguments sake, I can't even play WoW or more than 10 minutes before it goes offline. I'll need to try and sit down tomorrow and disassemble the thing to see whats goin on.Yes, your low disk free is what's causing this. Take a can of compressed air and blow the dust off. BOINC WIKI |

Thats probably what it is (layer of dust), wont know for sure til I take the casing off since a can of air would only do so much blowing through vents etc. |

To open and clean a laptop is very hard (unless you have special opening for reaching the fan/heatsink) - sometimes you have to remove all the components to reach the fan. Compressed air (by compressor, not can (I don't know what the pressure was)) blown through the exit hole inside (in opposite direction of normal airflow) made magic in a matter of seconds (4-5 blows 1 sec each with 10 sec pause) to my daughter's HP laptop - the temperature afterwards keeps around 20-30°C lower than was before (now 50-55°C at idle, was ~75°C even using Power Saver profile in Vista). And you can use Power Saver profile (tested on Windows Vista, not XP) to avoid overheating and shutdown.  - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :)  |

I've opened up laptops before so thats not an issue even though it is a PIA depending on the laptop being worked with. Nice thougt on the exit hole blowing through, if anything thats worth a first shot ;-)
