Thanks to the Gillard (and formerly Rudd) Government in Australia, I am signing off from ALL BOINC projects that I contribute to. My electricity bill has near doubled.

Well, I am sorry to see any Seti contributor go, but I understand your situation.
If things change for you, hopefully you will find your way back some day.

Best wishes regardless.

Message 1133653 - Posted: 29 Jul 2011, 20:16:18 UTC

I haven't been able to get any work for about a week now, since I don't leave my machines on 24/7 any more. Each time I've tried to get more work I get the message that there is no work available. It seems that if there are so many crunchers out there that the hoppers are mostly empty, then perhaps they don't need so many crunchers. I have scaled back to one machine most of the time and only occasionally do I get work for a second. I used to crunch seven computers.

I will finish off the work units I have started but the machine that I have dedicated to crunching is an old proliant ml330 g3 server. Not much in the way of a GPU.

My linux servers is running 24/7 but has not been able to get any work for more than a week. I have considered signing off too, since it seems like linux and BOINC does not work very well for the time being.

i find it easier and cheaper to crunch using a laptop as they are cheaper on electricity

But no chance of GPU throughput.

Yes it is. But when things does not work and there is no answer why it fails, the easiest way is just go do something else and forget about BOINC.

My three windows workstation will continue to run as long as it works, but I'm not sure if I will use more time trying to get BOINC work properly under Linux. Most of my CPUs are running Linux.

Regarding those that are struggling for WUs... I have two boxes that are only on for 12-15 hrs a day that haven't been out of work for over a month when I set them up, compared to a couple of others that are on 24/7 that are struggling to keep the 'hoppers full'. I can't understand the logic - some machines just seem to go through rough patches.

Somebody told me that Nvidia sell external boxes that take up to 4 full size graphic cards. If true, I wonder if ATI will follow suit.

google for - PCI Express: Expansion Backplanes or words to that affect :¬)

As an example have a look at this lot http://www.cyclone.com/products/expansion_backplanes/index.php
BUT they cost a bit . . . . :¬(

You do realise the carbon tax isn't in place yet and any elec price increases are purely due to price gouging by the suppliers.

Hi BMH (& fellow GPUUG buddy)

My main rig hasn't recieved anything today, and has had barely any WU's over the past few days. Yet my other, less capable rigs have been getting more than enough, which is irritating because it's my main rig that needs the work to keep up RAC figures. It doesn't make sense to me...

I can empathise with others on this thread, giving up.... It does look like there's now more crunchers, than there is work units... so maybe SETI is at max capacity now and doesn't need more crunchers...???

Just a thought..

Chris,

Do you know anybody that has build a rig using expansion backplanes and is crunching 7X24 ?
I am interested and intrigued to say the least - looking at my RAC you will know why I just
couldn't keep things cool this summer here in Dallas with 25+ days over 100F. Thinking to unloading some machines and going this expansion route. Comments most welcome.

JPM - sorry to see you bail - I hope you'll come back someday.

JPM, you can still crunch. The idea behind S@H was to use spare cycles. That means running in the background when your computer is on but idle. For example when you go grab lunch or a cup of coffee. If you use the program as originally envisioned then you can still crunch and only burn the electricity that your computer will burn anyway.

I don't think it works like that any more. As soon as your computer becomes idle and BOINC starts crunching, it's going to use 100% of the CPU by default... in all honesty, if you wanted to save electricity you'd be better off letting a computer go to sleep or better still shut it down.

I think Carlos meant let it run while you are using your computer and it will just use the cycles you aren't using and yes, if you aren't using any yourself it will use all 100% while it has a chance, like while you are at lunch but didn't turn your computer off. Once you are done with your computer for the day just shut it down. BOINC will adjust and just feed you the work you can get done running that way.

If the "only" reason for shutting down the computer(s) is be course of the heat, I down understand why not just throttle the CPU/GPU, then the PCs wont get too hot and your still crunching.
