Sea Shepherd have been making positive waves against the next biggest seal 'cull' after the Canadian slaughter:

Namibia: Seal culling exposed to the world

PAUL Watson, founder of environmental group Sea Shepherd, yesterday confirmed that they masterminded the secret filming of Namibia’s controversial seal culling at Cape Cross recently.

[...]

...after managing to plant hidden cameras close to the seal culling, navy vessels showed up which necessitated a retreat. “They had to run back to the cars some 5 km away and then drive into the hills.”

They managed to escape the authorities and eventually fled into South Africa last weekend. ...

The seals are listed by CITES as endangered. No surprise there when many thousands are slaughtered each year.

Daring stuff! And great determination!

And yet again, it is the greed and corruption of just one or a few destroying the planet for everyone else...

Looks like things have been stirred in Namibia:

‘Namibian seals not endangered’ - by Desie Heita

WINDHOEK - Truth-bending and bashing approach by animal activist groups continue to irk Namibian authorities, and the Namibian Ombudsman has vowed to make its findings public, once impartial investigations into seal culling are complete.

Animal rights groups’ continuous description of seals as “endangered” as per the definition by Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) had the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources seeking legal opinion before giving the go-ahead to authorise this year’s culling.

CITES lists seals under Appendix II, for non-endangered “species that are not necessarily now threatened with extinction, but that may become so unless trade is closely controlled.” ...

... “So far, I have wild allegations with no facts. I will complete my investigation and make my findings public. It is only fair that the truth is known whether or not we are exploiting, over utilising our resources,” says Walters.

The Ombudsman says his office receives correspondence with opinions but no facts.

He also challenge Seashepherd Conservation Society captain Paul Watson to approach the Anti-Corruption Commission with the allegation that the seal culling “is an illegal hunt that survives only because of bribes and corruption reaching to the highest levels of the Namibian government, police, and military”.

Looks like things have been stirred in Namibia...

Hopefully, for the better:

Is Namibian resolve to slaughter seals eroding?

Following Sea Shepherd’s summer campaign to protect the seals of Namibia, there has been an international outcry regarding the issue. The pressure on the Namibian government, and particularly on the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, to end the brutal and senseless annual slaughter of over 90,000 seals has led to an invitation for Sea Shepherd to attend what may be a pivotal meeting in Namibia on this month of September, the 20th, to discuss the issue with the Ombudsman and other stakeholders.

A lot has happened since...

... Despite statements to the contrary by Namibia’s self interested politicians, the report concludes that the slaughter nets Namibia far less in real profit, than the profits gained from seal watching tourism. ...

Another win from worldwide publicity and a positive side to tourism?
