Looks like Sea Shepherd were rather too successful in saving at least some of the tuna from extinction:

Sea Shepherd warns protest ship could be lost within 30 days

THE fish conservation group Sea Shepherd has less than a month to raise the $1,400,000 needed to free its flagship the Steve Irwin which is being held in the Shetland Islands. If, not, it seriously risks losing the protest vessel...

Emergency SOS from Captain Paul Watson: Save Our Ship!

... We have a legal firm representing us, and believe we have the necessary evidence to support our case. This lawsuit will also give us the opportunity to expose what we allege to be illegal activities by Fish and Fish and we will be aggressively defending the case on this basis. The protection of the endangered bluefin is vitally important to our oceans, and to humanity, because if the oceans die…we die.

Now, unless we post a bond for USD$1,411,692.87, the Steve Irwin will be held indefinitely and possibly sold. ...

... we have a long way to go. I urge you to send the largest gift you can today – your gift is incredibly important and will make a difference by helping us save the lives of endangered whales. ...

All and any help can only do good for that one.

I'm also going to be asking my MP how a dubious Maltese operation can have the UK impound and confiscate a non-UK ship BEFORE any court trial!

Rather nasty and one that Fish and Fish Ltd need condemning for. (Or is this actually being sponsored by the Japanese for their tuna profits and for the demise of yet more whales?)

Looks like there's been some response from the world but Sea Shepherd are still a long way off yet...

(UK) Guardian: Sea Shepherd could be forced to sell Steve Irwin in bluefin dispute

... The Steve Irwin was impounded by the court on 15 July and now the man described by the Japanese as a pirate has just days left to post a bond for £860,000.

In a statement last week, Watson said that if the group fails to post the bond, "the Steve Irwin will be held indefinitely and possibly sold. ...

... The group has reportedly raised £185,000 so far. ...

SAVE OUR SHIP

Never has the need for your help and support been greater! Our vessel the Steve Irwin has been detained by the UK courts because of a civil lawsuit brought against Sea Shepherd by a Maltese company: Fish and Fish Limited (F & F). This is due to our actions that saved 800+ illegally caught bluefin tuna during Operation Blue Rage 2010.

Unless we immediately post a bond for USD$1,411,692.87, the Steve Irwin will be held or possibly sold. Your gift is incredibly important and will make a difference. Thank you!

Unfortunately, time is quickly running out on that one :-(

The Maltese must be gloating over this one!

Sea Shepherd still short of bond to release detained flagship

The Sea Shepherd fisheries conservation society has so far collected $442,279.37 out of the $1,411,692.87 it needs for a bond on its flagship, which has been detained by court order at a Scottish port following a request by a Maltese company. ...

A close call at high cost:

Sea Shepherd flagship released as civil suit by Maltese company awaits

A fundraising campaign has made it possible for the Sea Shepherd to reclaim its flagship, the Steve Irwin – which was detained by the British authorities after the NGO was sued by a Maltese fishing company. ...

... The NGO had expressed concerns about the fact that under British law, the ship could be seized after 30 days and sold off if it was unable to raise the funds required. ...

... “We’re convinced we can win this case because we have a lot of evidence and documentation that shows that what Fish & Fish was doing with bluefin tuna, the endangered blue fin, was illegal. They were poachers,” he said in a fundraising appeal.

“We will not be unsettled or bullied by their wealth and their reputation of using litigation to silence their opposition,” Cpt Watson added in a Sea Shepherd press release. ...

Sea Shepherd's Flagship Vessel the Steve Irwin is Free at Last

Due to the generosity of our supporters around the world, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has raised over $735,000 to save the flagship Steve Irwin—less than two weeks after the launch of our SOS! - Save Our Ship fundraising campaign! Thank you to everyone who helped make it possible for us to fund a bond to release the vessel from detainment! Together, we will continue to make a difference. ...

... on the island — Ta'Mattew Fish Farms, Fish & Fish Tuna Ranch, Malta Fish Farms, AJD Tuna, and Mare Blu Tuna Ranch. The companies accused Vassallo of being responsible for financial losses caused by his “libelous” and “defamatory” allegations.

The charges against Vassallo were eventually dropped but the tuna companies continue to sue the newspaper because the lawsuit functions to prevent the newspaper from reporting on the issue.

Fish & Fish are trying to intimidate Sea Shepherd as well, and hoping to cripple us financially, and thus reduce our ability to oppose tuna poaching in the Mediterranean.

“We will not be unsettled or bullied by their wealth and their reputation of using litigation to silence their opposition. The bluefin tuna is on the threshold of extinction,” said Sea Shepherd Founder and President Captain Paul Watson. “We owe it to this species to fight the poachers on the sea, in the media, and in the courts. We acted justly in intervening against their illegal operation. ...

... “We are in a war to save our oceans from ourselves,” said Captain Watson. “And if we lose, we all lose because if the oceans die, we all die – it’s as simple as that.”

Please continue to support us and keep our ships at sea, doing what they do best!
