Have to shutdown all crunching because of the heatwave, will bring back onlne sometime tonight. Had to make a run to the Philly suburbs and the temp in the car hit 106. Got back home and the temp is 97 with an index of 104. CPU temps on the i7/950 reached 80 while crunching and the cards remain cool -- no CUDA work. Tommorrow is supposed to be worse with a predicted high of 102.

we've been having that for the last 2 months in Texas. 19 straight days of 100+ degree days

Relative Humidty mid 20%
Ambient mid teens (Deg C) - recovering from a cold two-week spell.

Just another normal winter. ;-)

Well, we have the opposite situation here in the North West (Canadian West Coast). Still cool and wet, barely making it into the low 20's C. We've had maybe 1/2 dozen days so far this year where it's made it to 25C, so needless to say haven't had to slow down yet.

My parents in OK were telling me about how they have been "enjoying" the 100+'s for the past few weeks without any rain. So they decided to send some of it up here to me in the Philly/S. Joisie area. Feel free to blame them :)
At the moment, 2:30pm, wunderground is reporting 105.7°F with an index of 117°F for us.
Last night my A/C ran until 11:30 when I shut it off to rest for a bit & it had only gotten down to 76°F inside. So for today I elected to shut everything down until Sunday when it is only supposed to be 99°F out.

It's a little better here in Delaware, but only because I'm right on the river. Still, in the essence of power conservation, I shut crunchers down.

In Arizona the 100+ temps are not a big deal -- we get 100 days or more every year. But we don't get the humidity. During our 'monsoon season' (July and August) the humidity hits 30% or so (up from about 10% in June).

That being said, during the summer, I shut down a portion of the farm to reduce the cooling requirements.

The temperature peaked at 15°C today in the Netherlands so I may have to switch on some more pc's to keep the house warm.

And yes, it is supposed to be summer here and the normal (average) maximum temperature this time of the year is 22.1°C...

Yeah, the heatwave has now hit SW Scotland; I had to open my window by an extra 3/4" today! ;-)

I hate you and your cool weather ;-) I have shut down new tasks and only crunching the cache at night during the lower temps. As soon as they are done I am done for a bit. The AC units as straining and only mange a 15 degree F delta inside to outside.

Even though the hi today was 101 and the index was 104, I turned on both crunchers today, but started them at the bios with no HT to keep the core temps down. They were very angry with me when I turned this on this morning. Since I haven't had any CUDA tasks since Thursday, both machines are runnig @90%. That's 3 cores on the i7/950 & 2 on the Q6600.

The 24 year old A/C in my place knows what you are talking about. With it in the mid 90's I was only seeing 81ºF in my place. Today I did some thinking and turned off the ceiling fan in my living room. So all the hot air that build up in the loft over the living room stayed up there instead of being circulated around. I managed a respectable 76ºF while it was 102ºF out today.
I was thinking about setting up all of my crunchers up in the loft, but the thermal nature of my place indicates that would be a bad idea.

We are having ~80-90 degree weather at the moment. However it's a cozy 68 degrees in my computer room. Once the humidity and temps shot back up next week I'll be lucky to keep my computer room ~80 degrees. Yuck, crunchers have been up and down over the past few weeks during the days due to temps and me needing to work out of there. I hate heat....I think winter need to hurry up and get here.

I have idled the majority of my big crunchers - going on 22+ days of 100F+ days here in Dallas.

So weather is supposed to have you make a PC break?

What about thunder and lightning then? Do you have to pull the plug when it stumbles upon you?

My computer room has a window that is facing east. I am able to see almost down to the city center
(2 miles from being able to do so, just behind the trees in the northeast and downhill from there).

So if I am busy in here, this ugly stuff (warm and humid) could come up from the south or east
(meaning south-east as well), meating with the colder air typically spreading inland from west and south-west.

About a week or so ago we had two such days with only a short interval in between where this occurred.

During the later phase of the thunderstorm I was able to see two or three big flashes up in the hill across the city valley. The distance may have been some 6-8 miles or so. These flashes were big ones and definitely some of them must have hit the ground.

If the temperature should become just a couple of degrees higher, my guess is that things could become quite nasty here and I would have to unplug both my television as well as TV from the mains. Hopefully the fridge as well as oven should be able to survive. Really all I could do is unplug at least the fridge.

Perhaps I should check the other plug as well? You never know before it is to late. Anyway, it may seem the thundering has come to a finish for this time. Thank you, rainman!

My AC failed Saturday at 3:00 AM in the bedroom where my rig is. I have been shut down ever since. I was able to find a new AC after searching in some 15 stores. It is a window mount, but I was able to pay a carpenter to get it in the wall. The one that broke was an 8000 BTU, and this one is a 12,000 BTU. Even my cruncher can't overpower it, with 900 watts from the tower, and another 250 from the aquarium chiller, plus more from the UPS and fan bank. This is perfect, as it is even not a digital AC, so when I lose power, and it is restored, the cooling goes right back where it was. I am very happy at the moment! The heatwave prevented me from even turning my rig on without AC, let alone crunching, but I'm back at full speed. There goes the electric bill....

Hi, Steve!

Came across a new terminology used for currents the other day that was new to me. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coulomb/ .

Can't tell where you are hailing from (which country), but yes in order to cut down on machine temps and saving expensive equipment there are times such as heatwaves where it may become necessary. Especially if the room where the machine(s) reside does not have a/c as in my case. Because the machines are connected to individual UPS and the house central circut breakers, I am less fearful of lightning strikes then I am of a machine shutdown because of over heating. I realize that there is a cutoff point where the machine will shutdown when the CPU temps reaches a certain point in self-preservation, but why take the chance? My main cruncher did just that overnite the night before (Wednesday 7/20), since that time I have kept very close watch on my core temps and adjusting the crunching accordingly. The 6th heatwave is scheduled later this week although it's not suppossed to be triple digits.

So whole these temperature claims mean that for setiers the dream place to live is antarctid. BTW dell laptop (32nm cpu) is not good that in recent days it shut down itself several times during +31 celsus while last year my hp laptop (45nm cpu) did not shutdown itself ever in similar or heavier condition. Even though many tech studies claimed that hp rating is lower than dell and 45nm must heat up more than 32nm.
