Fusion is a nuclear reaction involving both protons and neutrons. Probably you mean muon-provoked fusion, which was proposed by Andrej Saharov many years ago but never proved working. The physics of fusion is very well known, it is the engineering of fusion reactors which poses huge challenges.

I've talked with prof.Bruno Coppi of MIT, the father of the Alcator tokamak, and he has been proposing a kind of tokamak costing far less than ITER, but so far none has been built. They are called IGNITOR and should cost about 200 million dollars each.
