Message 1129046 - Posted: 18 Jul 2011, 2:20:46 UTC - in response to Message 1129042.

what do you guys recomend for a power supply for me.

i dont care about flashy looks or led lit fans. i just need something with good 12v amps. i only run 1 10,000 rpm sata2 hdd, 2 dvd drives, a dual core e5200, 4 gigs of pc-2 1066, a 560ti gc, pci wireless g, and then the standard keyboardmouse speakers bla bla.

i have a like 4 fans total, but they are 120mm big slow units from thermal take and only 1/3 amp each.

i do have about 20 led's in the case running off the 3.3v rail, but all total they probbaly take 1/4 amp of power.

my current power supply has 23 amps of 12v , i think i need something with about 40 amps.

Stick with something with a single 12v rail, and overkill it. Folks seem to be having some problems with the 560ti's and there has been a lot of finger pointing at possible power supply problems.

The specs for the NV 560Ti require a +12V rail that can supply a minimum of 30A. You are woefully undersized with your current PS to handle the video card and the rest of your peripherals. I'd go with a good 650W PS like a Corsair or PC Power and Cooling.

One size up if they have one... 2x 560ti's will pretty much eat up that whole 62.5A at peak.

Plenty for 2. Have they got another bigger one for maximum overkill & upgrade headroom ?

Yeah, but then they go to 1200w for $400.00+....
Might be other good candidates at that power range.

wow my cars alternator only puts out 60amps max. i really need a 62amp power supply?

could i hook up 2 power supplys together? i have a few 400W units laying around from gutted computers. i googles that but i only got results about using 1 power supply with 2 computers, and a y harness for that. i didnt get any results about using 2 power supplies for 1 pc. anyone know? i wonder if the voltage regulation of multiple power supplies would fight each other.

thanks for the suggestions thus far.

[Edit: Scratch this, I was thinking 2x560tis from another thread, the 62 Amp one would be a good choice if running 1x 560ti only... ]

The 62 Amp one wouldn't be enough for all the hardware [was thinking 2x560tis...] listed operating peak *safely* for an extended period of say 2 or 3 years IMO. It might work well for a while, but over the life of a supply you can expect its efficiency & output capability to derate ~20-30% or so, so the 950 Watt would be a better choice if running two of those cards (plus all the other stuff).

Hooking up multiple supplies is possible, but there are things to worry about like compatible grounding schemes & turn-on triggering etc. I wouldn't do it myself with several 'average' PSUs.

The 560ti's appear to be churning out work at about 2/3rds+ of an OC'd GTX480 each, at much lower power & temperatures, so you're dealing with fairly monstrous crunching capability there. For comparison, we pretty much established that a system with 2x480's in it really needs a good 1200Watt supply.

yeah the 560ti when it is working, can crank out a work unit in a minute 30 seconds to 2 minutes flat, running 3 work units at once. and while underclocked and undervolted. i think those are shorty units though. the thing is its so unstable right now, and the lack of work units available to download, ive only crunched a dozen or so in the last 2 weeks on my 560ti rig.

when i get the power issues sorted out and start bios modding, overvolting, overclocking and supercooling i bet i can drop the times by 25-35%. thats what i got after modding the 550ti in the guest bedroom. 30% faster work units times by modding it. im hoping for the same increase with this 560ti. then add the 3 and a half ghz 4mb L2 c2d thats in that rig and its not a bad cruncher for using bargain basement low end parts.

im never going to have the crunching power of someone like msattler, but i do what i can with what i got.

im going to try running the card off one power supply, and the rest of the system off another. ill report back how it went. i like msattlers idea of a single large 12v rail, but money is tight these days. if i can get 2 ps's to work instead of buying a 3rd, ill do it. if this fails then ill get the 3rd one and make it a monster. to take into account future upgrades.

sorry to jack you thread slavac.

I have a Xenta 800W 80plus PSU powering two 560Ti's in a Core i5 rig (only 1 hard drive and 1 optical drive and 3 fans). No problems. I wasn't sure about the brand but it's coping well - I normally go for a brand I recognise (Antec/Corstair for example) and certainly something that's 80plus rated, but this was a good price.

I've used two PSUs to power multiple GPUs in the past. I made a 20pin 2-way motherboard lead so both PSUs switch on and off together. But again, you still need PSUs you can trust and that provide enough Amps on the 12v rail(s).

Welllll.... Beta testing goes on...

I just ran into the "sticky downclock" gremlin, again. I have been running BOINC 6.12.33 x86 64 for a while and my combined RAC (S@H + GPUGRID) has leveled-out(?) at slightly over 23,000 using nVidia driver 275.33 with my Palit GTX-560Ti Sonic downclocked to 850Mhz.

I switched to the 275.50 driver around an hour ago and 'boink'... downclock!

I have now re-started with AP work disabled. When a 'stable' version of AP For CUDA is included in the 64-bit Unified Installer I'll have another go at crunching AP work-units.

Side-Note: Before installing the 275.50 driver I attempted to install the 266.58 driver and it failed the install saying it was not compatible with my graphics card...

Note that, as far as I'm aware, no other Boinc enabled project has updated their applications to include the necessary fixes to the boincAPi component for threadsafe gpu app behaviour yet...(as do x38g release & x39e test builds).

So if you run other projects (such as GPUGrid) your option is to stick with with whatever Cuda 3.2 (pre-270.xx, which are Cuda 4.0 drivers) you can get for your card, until their applications are updated [to add boincAPI fixes].

Cuda 4.0 drivers do not tolerate having the feeding applications terminated underneath executing kernels (as boincAPI does during a snooze or error exit) since newer device driver models make heavy use of threaded & asynchronous operation in various ways.

[Edit:] LoL, It's like this:
Patient says, "Doctor, It hurts when I do this!..."
Doctor says, "Well, stop doing that."

... the HD5830 just up and died on me today.

Any clues on what happened there ?

Other than the fan is not spinning on it at all, so might be fan controller.

I had to stick my old 4830 in there for the time being and that required booting without any card in first and removing the AMD drivers before it would work.

Have you tried plugging a different PCIe power cable in? (Some Months ago my HD5770 kept going Awol, until i swapped power cables)
(That PCIe power cable is tucked to one side now, and i haven't tried re-using it yet)

Claggy

Both of the cables that were plugged into the 5830 work fine with the 4830, right now I am seeing if I can get a RMA on the card as it is still in the warranty period. I still plan on getting something new tomorrow so I can get back to better production.

Thanks Jason for the cogent explanation. BUT... I can't install ANY of the pre-27n.nn drivers. They ALL give me a Your Card Does Not Support This Driver message!

Oh well... just wait for better days. ;-/

What Driver numbers were you trying? 266.66 and 267.26 should work,

Yeah that early I believe there are 560ti specific ones: 266.66 WHQL & 267.26 Beta. I can't vouch for their quality, though they *should* install & hopefully let you run the other projects if you need.

They don't show up on other card lists, so you need the advanced driver search I believe.

If neither of those versions I mentioned does the trick, then I'm stumped on that one,

Jason

The 266.66 drivers should be the ones you are looking for in the pre-27x.xx era.

I am downloading the 267.26 beta driver now...

If all goes well with S@H running alone I MAY try attaching to GPUGRID again in a few days. We shall see...

Thanks for the help!

New (old) 267.26 driver is running, and following a re-set of the clock down to 850 from the default of 900 things seem to be AOK. PHEW...

I kinda jumped-the-gun and have GPUGRID running and am waiting for some AP work.

Time will tell...
