What? Are you saying we aren't allowed to Google?
Where does it say that?

I think I'm in trouble!

Ney, not in trouble. It's just that you can now Google photo images and if Google's carried out a ground-up photo survey of that area it will tell you where it is.

Now that would be cheating, using this facility, but hopefully no ones into cheating here for that would spoil the fun.

I don't do that, I don't know how.
I simply type in what I believe are keywords
Is that O.K.?

I'll stop playing, I don't want to get in trouble.

Ooooops!...It better be ok, KLC (he-he) for I spent hours looking at the canoeing sites in Africa using the Google search engine. I looked at many canoeing photos of the rivers as we went along plus getting guidance from the geographical maps showing the types of terrain too. Then comparing this to Simonators photo checking that the flora types matched too. This stopped me from chasing rivers that did not match-up to the scene in Simonators photo. It all took me some time though before I finally got my act together and hence checked the rivers this way. So like you I too gave Google a right old bashing!!

Image search, how do you do that? Even though I don't play this game anymore.

From the rules
Contestants may use text searches to look for images (in particular images.google.com is allowed to be searched via text searches).

Thanks arkayn. Much appreciated, sir. :o)

There's a new facility reportedly set-up by Google, I think it's part of Google Earth. Here you can paste a photo image taken of some scenery and if Google has ground mapped this area, ground upwards so to speak, it will tell you where the shot was taken from. I don't know what areas Google has covered but in time virtually the whole of the Earth will be covered. KLC and I during the Simonator expedition through Africa just used photos and the like as posted by people, and various organisations too, who had posted river shots on the web. Still, you needed Simonators prompts though to get you in the right area 'cos there's an awfull lot of rivers in Africa so you needed to be fairly close to the right spot before any canoeing photo's helped you out.

Oh, so that's how it works. Good thing I don't play this game anymore, the temptation might be over powering.

New Google Search Function to Identify Photos
Updated: Wednesday, 15 Jun 2011, 8:37 AM EDT
Published : Wednesday, 15 Jun 2011, 8:37 AM EDT
(The Wall Street Journal) - Internet users will be able to find out what date and where any photograph was taken by dropping the image into a Google search box, the company has announced.
From Wednesday it will be possible for users to drag and drop an image from their personal collection, or paste the picture's web address into Google's search engine to find out where the photograph was taken and on what date.
The new search function was announced by Google's search chief Amit Singhal at a public event in San Francisco on Tuesday, where executives stressed the feature would not recognize people's faces from the photographs

It's mostly tied up with cameras that record GPS coordinates of the spot where the photograph were taken i.e. those as taken by mobile phones. It does mention the facility of drag & drop from a personal collection but does not state if this photo needs first to have been taken from a camera that has GPS facilities built in. So the thing to do is if we use an image taken from a web site one needs to run it through Google first to make sure it's not got GPS tags.

And the other part of the rules.
You may not use "tin eye" or similar reverse image look up sites.

Please do not use EXIF data from the image to help. (note to posters, please remove EXIF data). This can include titles and location data.

I hate to delay your fun friends, but I have just finished a recovery of downed systems at work and I am going to stare at the inside of my eyelids for about 8 hours. I will post a new pic tomorrow morning by 8:00 US Eastern Time, or defer to anyone who has one ready... Just drop me a PM if you wish to take over...

Cheers!

Sir William

EDIT: BTW Michael, I googled the following phrase: "english clock tower asia" and parsed through several hundred images until I found a different shot of the same clock tower, then zeroed in on location, etc. through the Borneo tourism website and Wikipedia...

:-)

Sir William Sherlock-Holmes, I must credit you with a smart move here for you have exceeded all my expectations. Yet it is "I" Moriarty who set this task, next time - I will not be so careless - with my clues.

Good Morning All!

Here is our next location, please identify the location of the piece of beach on which this lonely coconut sapling is struggling to root:

South Pacific, Yes.
Lagoon, sort of, there is definitely a reef out there with the whitecaps...
