I installed BOINC earlier today alongside with SETI@Home, but it gave me a red cross with "no new tasks". Puzzled, I joined another BOINC project, to see if the issue was my network/machine, but that worked fine. I'd love if you could help me! Thanks! |

If one project works and another does not, it is usually caused by some problem at the project server. In this case, it is likely to be the hangover from the weekly scheduled maintenance outage at S@H. It typically takes a day or so for all work requests to be granted again. BOINC WIKI |

I keep getting "Project backoff: <time>". Time is in minutes or hours. Does this help at all? |

I keep getting "Project backoff: <time>". Time is in minutes or hours. Does this help at all? Unfortunately, this message does not help diagnosis anything at all. The 1 to 5 messages before this one might help us. BOINC WIKI |

Well, I get the "poject backoff" message for my "Transfers". For my actual tasks, several of which I've completed to 100%, I get "Uploading". And from there, unlike my other BOINC projects, it doesn't seem to do anything. My malaria control completes tasks to 100% and then has "ready to report" in the "status" column. My seti@home only says "uploading". Why is this? |

Oh, and when I try to update SETI@Home, it gives me a "communication deferred" with about 5 minutes or more. Maybe that'll help in diagnosing what I've done wrong... |

Don't know if any of the regulars are in at this hour, so I'll chime in. No one can upload now. Seti's upload server has been disabled since yesterday afternoon their time. It probably won't be back until they get in and fix it = it's not a 24/7 computing center. You will get increasing backoff times each time BOINC tries and can't connect. The status will show as "uploading" until such time as it can transfer, and then will change to ready to report. Expect heavy traffic and difficulty with uploads and downloads when tranfers resume. After the upload completes, an update can report the result and it proceeds to the validation process on the servers. The status of the servers is available from the Home Page (menu at top of page.) Always look at the time stamp. It usually updates every 8 - 10 minutes, but has been getting stuck lately and is not always reliable. There is a glossary at the bottom of the page to help understand what each server / process does. As to the communication deferred, the 5 minute deferral is normal for SETI - each project chooses that interval - some use a one minute deferral. It's to keep folks and BOINC from bombarding the servers with too many requests when things are not working right. If you get a shorter deferral, the update probably did not connect. Hope this helps.
