Message 1116852 - Posted: 13 Jun 2011, 23:07:54 UTC

I was trying to download another "something".
At any rate the message got mixed up. I deleted Boinc. I've installed a news one which is 6.12.26. I can't connect to anything. Nothing works. Help!

if your something is a bit torrent and you are using anything resembling peerguardian, then you won't be able to connect to seti. Turn it off then retry BOINC

please explain your first line... "I was downloading something." this may seem innocent but to regular person it seems you are hiding something. Like illegal downloads. I wouldn't accuse anyone of this. I'm making a point.

you say you are downloading something. and then you deleted boinc and reinstalled it. is that correct so far. FF browser is irrelevant. You also seem to have gotten 2 computers now so its pretty clear you've reinstalled BOINC at least 2 times on the same computer already.

Care to elaborate on what happens when you install BOINC

Also you may wish to uncheck the "Astropulse v5" your projects on seti. You have a 1500 mhz CPU the recommended CPU is a 1.6GHZ not much of a difference but its a matter of actually being able to complete the work and actually getting it back in on time to receive credit

Message 1116893 - Posted: 14 Jun 2011, 1:46:09 UTC - in response to Message 1116890.

it was something from Eric Korpela. I was to install it not remove Boinc.
I really screwed up. Bionc can't connect to server. Under tools says to use advanced. This one is different from my old Bionc. I might have done something in the download?? My son has tried to help and he can't get anywhere. Hope that helps.
Thank you, Lynn

You can find BOINC v6.10.60 on this page, though if there's something wrong with your configuration it won't change the situation.

Any chance you can post any relevant lines from your Messages tab (or Event Log as it's called in BOINC v6.12.26)? It may help to shed some light on this.

Did you see the link in Ozzfan's message? It gives you the opportunity to download older versions of BOINC.

In the same message, he told you that the Messages tab is now called "Event log". It can be reached via Advanced menu.

Gruß,
Gundolf
[edit]If your BOINC manager can't connect to the client (localhost), look for the log file (stdoutdae.txt) in the BOINC data directory and post the last about 20 lines here (best after a reboot). The directory might be hidden by windows.[/edit]

And if your BOINC Manager cannot connect to the client, then all teh deleting of BOINC won't fix that. That's a permission (firewall or password) problem.

Make sure you allowed BOINC (boinc.exe) and BOINC Manager (boincmgr.exe) through your local firewall; if you have to set up a port number, the two communicate on TCP 31416. Only boinc.exe is to be allowed access to the internet as well; if you have to set up ports here, it's for TCP 80 and 443.

What you can also try to do is open BOINC Manager, then when you've got the message about the password, fill in "localhost" (without the quotes) for host name and leave the password blank, then click OK.

If that doesn't work, navigate to your BOINC Data directory (default paths in this FAQ), find the file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg and open it with Notepad. Now copy the randomly made password that's in here, --Edit->Select all->Copy, this copies the password to clipboard. You can now exit Notepad. Do NOT save any changes!-- start BOINC Manager, fill in "localhost" (without the quotes) for the host name and paste the password you copied in the password box. Then click OK.

The above methods do still require that you allowed BOINC through your local firewall first!

Now as for problem description, you're making it quite difficult for anyone to help you. No matter how you feel, you're the one with the problem. We aren't looking over your shoulder, we do not see what you see or do, so you must be as descriptive as possible about what your problem is. That doesn't necessarily need to be in technical lingo.

After all what you tried, we're still not sure what you've experienced. What program did Eric make you download? What was the exact message on the failed download? Why did that make you delete BOINC? How did you delete BOINC (Add/Remove Programs, Windows Task Manager, or by actually deleting the BOINC installation directory)? Do you really have two P4s 1500s, or is that only one system that now got doubled? Is this doubling a side-effect from what happened to you?

You can disable the screen saver by going to the properties of Windows desktop->Screen saver->Select anything other than BOINC or set it to None.
Or disable it through BOINC installation: In the BOINC installer, 3rd screen in, there's an Advanced button. Click that one next time, then UNCHECK "Use BOINC screen saver" before continuing with the installation.

6.12.26 does arrange its tabs and such a little differently. But going BOINC Manager->Help->BOINC Manager Help gets you to Advanced View 6.12 which explains a lot. The Messages tab is gone, yes, everyone has that effect. It isn't coming back, no. You can still see the messages, although if you're that panicky over whatever it is that happened to you, I am not sure if telling you how to see the Event Log is going to help in any way, sorry to say. The Notices tab may be set there all for you, especially for you. If you feel adventurous, try leaving BOINC up and in focus, then press CTRL + SHIFT +E at the same time. That'll open the Event Log window, or a window especially for the messages.

If you want to return to 6.10.60, you will need to uninstall present BOINC first. You cannot start the .60 installer and hope it'll uninstall 6.12, as it won't and doesn't. Go through Add/Remove Programs and remove BOINC first, and only then start the installer of .60

Lastly, sorry for the amount of typing I have done. It's just to show you that there's really no need to post in Twitter style, cramped sentences of 140 characters only. As said, be as descriptive as possible in your explanation.

Just think it's like bringing your car to the garage. Just leaving a note for the mechanics wherein you state that there is a problem with your car, that it's got to do with "something" on the car and that your son is no help in this is going to leave the mechanics baffled and your car unfixed by the end of the week.

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for all the help! My son fixed it. He tweeked a couple of things. But it works. Yes! I'm so happy! I was attempting to install the Lunatics installer for optomised apps, and misread the instructions I was given, and uninstalled Boinc manager instead of just temporarily closing it down.

Thanks so much to everyone,
Lynn

I often learn a lot of useful info from the MESSAGES. 6.12.26 seems like a step backwards to me. Why put in an extra step to view them? So far NOTICES is empty. Put that one on the Ctrl/Shift key. I installed 6.12.26 on 1 64-bit machine but for the time being will keep 6.10.60 on my other 3 systems.

Too many people view the informative messages as error messages. There's no need to have a semi-detailed log show for every user. It's not like the Windows Event Viewer is prominently displayed up front for all to see.
