If you haven't updated to SP1 yet and use eVGA's Precision it has the possibility of breaking it. It did on one of my machines and not the other. On the one it did it's hard crashes the entire machine.

Interesting, I use Precision on both of my active machines and never had a problem before or after SP1.

I didn't either one one of my machines. It's a known issue @ eVGA. I just replaced precision with RealTemp since I'm water cooled fan speeds don't matter. As far as overclocking I will use Nvidia Inspector I suppose, though I don't OC my cards.

Just checked the forums @ eVGA and noticed that all of the problems seems to be from gamers who keep Precision active while gaming. I am not a gamer and I only open the program when checking GPU temps adjusting as needed. Might be why I haven't had any problems.

No problems here with SP1 on Windows 7 64-Bit Ultimate. I did notice that the SP1 install was pretty quick, and fairly small in size. That makes sense because it's a combination of all the previous patches and hotfixes prior to the release of the service pack. If all the other patches and hotfixes were already installed via Windows Automatic Updates...

The original release of Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 had a major bug in it that could cause data loss during installation. Microsoft had to quickly withdraw the Service Pack until it was fixed and re-released as Service Pack 6a.

Remember that all too well. Fortunately there hasn't been a similarly serious issue since then. Sure, there are bugs that cause some people to have major problems (which is why Win7 SP1 pre-requisites a couple of HotFixes now), but nothing like as bad as those days, thankfully. OS upgrades are far more likely to cause trouble than ServicePacks, which is why I never do OS upgrades.

Been running Win7 SP1 on both my laptops and its brother Server 2008 R2 SP1 on several production servers for a few months now. Only ran into one (obscure) issue on Server 2008 for which there is a HotFix.

No problems here......
SP1 did not break anything I can determine.

Happy kitties.

The forum threads you read through may have eluded to that, however on one machine I have no issue what so ever, runs great. On my main machine start up precision and instant locks up and reboots computer, every time. Never had a chance to make it into games to see if I had issues there lol. Even went through a full machine reinstall etc. to try and cure it, no joy.

Must be a mix of hardware, drivers, and software that didn't agree with me. Haven't checked it out since the 266.58's and right after SP1, they may have fixed it. Didn't care to check it out again as I've found better solutions than using precision. Either way just pointing it out.

Dang software and hardware....sometime makes me wish I would have had the money to play with race cars!

Dunno.....just had to reboot though.
Browser got kinda wacky.

Will let you know if it persists.

This has happened before though.

The only issue I found with it was after installing SP1 windows mail no longer functioned in 7. Getting it to work in 7 before the SP involved a bunch of jiggery-pokery in the first place. So it looks like they did all they could to keep it form working at all.

I use my I7 everyday. the only issue I have is it won't resume from suspend mode. Other than that it runs a ok

Funny thing about that...Micro$oft introduced that with Win98...and it has NEVER worked correctly...THEN they introduced hibernation mode...which also doesn't work correctly. With Win7 they introduces sleep/hibernate HYBRID mode...and guess what! You guessed it, it doesn't work well either. Disable all three modes under power management and set the time out for monitor and drives if you like.

Personally, I just set it to power off the monitor after 15 minutes, doesn't interfere with crunching they way.

Suspend and resume work for my i7 (X58 MB).

Perhaps a BIOS firmware update or settings change will help?

Sleep/suspend/resume problems are mostly related to hardware. Especially clocked or naturally(by default) fast components.

E.g, my relatively new P67 system does not resumes from any sleep mode, when CPU multiplier is over 42. I observe this problem with three different Windows versions. Its know problem with intel IME UEFI component and they are addressing it.
Its not Windows issue.
One of my X58 systems, heavily overclocked(4.2 GHz), BSODs on every second resume from sleep.
Other X58 system, sligtly lower overclocked(4.05 GHz), has no any problems with sleep.
My laptop has no problems with any power related stuff and actions too.

Trust me it's winblows...

We have about 1000+ machines here at the refinery I'm currently at
mostly HP 7600, 7700, 7800, 7900, and 8000's for desktops.
The primary desktop right now is the 7700, 7600's being phased out, only a few
78-7900's with the 8000's replacing the 7600's

Anyway, these are all stock boxes, often with sequential serial numbers.
The sleep, hybrid, hibernate works on some and not on others. Same gear,
same os (vista32), same drivers, same stamped out drive image. It's just plain
flakey. Always has been and always will be... IMO.

Through an external linux (ubuntu) drive on them and they run like tops though!

Anyway, I've been a microsoft user since dos 1.23, and windows WFW 3.11 and it
still amazes me that we still accept the crap they put out. Anyone remember the
hoopla from win98 and the reason for win98se? ME? XP SP3?

I have rules for MS, never apply an sp in the first 3 months and never buy an
os the first year it's out...saves a LOT of headaches! :)

It sucked, but in a way, I really do miss dos. Migrating to linux as a better,
cheaper, more powerful choice!

lol Vista FTL indeed.

I personally have never had an issue with any of the sleep/hibernate/powersave functions working correctly within windows on any of the machines I have had in the past 17-18 years or so.

Computers always seem to have their own personality. Even for machines that are exactly the same. At the moment 5 of the i7's I've got are "exactly the same" in that they all have the save hardware, drivers, and OS installations. However each one of them has its own little quirks.

Well, if u like it in this way, let it be Windows :)

But Windows has defined execution behaviour and must follow well known and well defined too procedures when putting/resuming machine. It does it in same way, following the rules.
While hardware behavior, even on same(at a glance and specs) components can vary. Your example, in fact, states the same thing. On same hardware, Windows will behave in same way. Then, the only uncertain behavior remains from the hardware itself.

This makes my conclusion quite different than yours.

I've had suspend/hibernate not work correctly on some systems and I've had it work perfectly fine on others.

Every single time I investigate the problem, it either boils down to the hardware not supporting the right level of suspend/hibernate or the drivers not being compatible with the right level of suspend/hibernate. Either way, it was never Windows' fault.

True. My SSD doesn't like suspend/resume. Something to do with not resuming quickly enough, or in the right manner, or somesuch.

I just stopped using suspend and use hibernate instead when I have to - though that's not so good for SSDs either due to dumping out a 3GB resume file in a hurry.

There are varying reports that upgrading the firmware on the SSD fixes it. Since it's not guaranteed and since upgrading the firmware requires a secure erase of the entire SSD, that's not going to happen any time soon.
