Armchair astronaut discovers Mars 'space station' using Google earth

Video: Bio Station Alpha on Mars. The latest discovery by David Martines. Original Video

From Daily Mail among other agencies reporting this "find.": an American 'armchair astronaut' claims to have discovered a mysterious structure on the surface of the red planet - by looking on Google earth.

David Martines, whose YouTube video of the 'station' has racked up over 200,000 hits so far, claims to have randomly uncovered the picture while scanning the surface of the planet one day.

Describing the 'structure' as a living quarters with red and blue stripes on it, to the untrained eye it looks nothing more than a white splodge on an otherwise unblemished red landscape.

He even lists the co-ordinates 49'19.73"N 29 33'06.53"W so others can go see the anomaly for themselves.

Interesting find. Some have said it is pixelation of the image (The source image which Google used is from ESA's Mars Express orbiter, using the high resolution stereo camera. The image ID: H5620_0000_ND2):

Do we know the coordinates of the current rovers and the viking probes? or could this just be a rock?

Something doesn't add up. If the "object" is in fact 150 feet long then it should be clearly seen. My house is 80 feet long and is clearly identifiable as such in Google Earth in the satellite picture. I assume that the camera involved is as good as the one that produced the google earth satellite images.

I conclude that the object is small and is probably an anomalous artifact of pixellation.

I would normally agree with that...but the pixelation doesn't really add up with the actual said 'structure.' There are too many smaller 'structures' around alleged pixelation. I would think if it was a pixel error, then it would look just about the same as the pixels we see in the example.

I believe it is available on the JPL site, though as of this posting I have not looked. I used to be very much into the raw data on the JPL site from the rovers and remember seeing it somewhere. I would have to look again though.

EDIT: Yup I was correct. Here is the page: http://marsrover.nasa.gov/mission/traverse_maps.html...As of Sol 2614 (June 1, 2011), Opportunity's odometry is 30,055.50 meters (30.06 kilometers, or 18.68 miles). So I assume that Opportunity is 18.68 miles from it's landing site. Spirit is dead in the water. Here is a link to ALL the maps for Opportunity, from landing point to present day: http://marsrover.nasa.gov/mission/tm-opportunity-all.html

I have not looked up the viking crafts, the Phoenix crafts or any other "rovers."

Just an update: Someone on Above Top Secret made a rendering of what they think it would look like as a habitat, had humans made it (not sure if this is an actual NASA rendering)

Here is an official NASA rendering of what a possible Mars habitat would look like:

Smaller image unfortunately of another NASA habitat:

I like this one below:

I saw that a while back while looking at mars. I didn't report it because I thought it was ice. I still think that. ;)

Maybe this is a good spot for the next rover. :)

Now wouldn't that be funny if its actually left over cities that used to be on mars or even a top secret manned mars mission. lol

A pretty good geometrical formation to be ice. EDIT: also compare the image below to the actual image:

Upper right corner area...almost a similarity.

Another update...though I am only posting this link because it made me LOL.
http://www.huliq.com/10128/viral-youtube-video-google-earth-mars-explorer-shows-evidence-life

End of article: Alfred McEwen, a planetary geologist at the Lunar and Planetary Lab at the University of Arizona and also the Director of the Planetary Imaging Research Laboratory, calls it a digital glitch, stating “It looks like a linear streak artifact produced by a cosmic ray,” as he spoke with Space.com.

So...SWAMP GAS...lol sorry I had to say it.

Could be a crashed UFO. I think we need to move the Hubble and get a better photo.

I was looking for lost (crashed) spacecraft and the Viking Landers when I stumbled upon it. Anyone know where they are located?

I agree with a better photo. I am hoping NASA will at least investigate this a little bit. Though I am not sure what is in orbit around Mars to get such a HI-RES image.

A California armchair astronomer claims a white, fuzzy image on the red planet's surface might be evidence of life -- and even NASA didn't immediately know what if anything he had found.

David Martines' YouTube videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJt0LJZG2k is heading for viral status after he uploaded a flyby of Google Earth's Mars explorer zooming in on a white, cylindrical object.

It looks real to me. NASA has to investigate. Soon.

Jasons before and after filter pictures do look remarkably similiar. Are we are sure that this isn't an elaborate hoax? I would be quite easy to doctor images in that way. Just asking ....

As I said I am not sure if the first rendering I posted was a NASA rendering of a possible future habitat on Mars, or if it was someones interpretation of what they believed a Mars habitat would look like (Not from NASA or the likes). I have been unable to locate that image through NASA's databases. However, for the purpose of comparing I will use it as somewhat of an overlay with an official NASA rendering (since there is, or at least I cannot find a larger NASA rendering of one of the previous images I posted below, this will have to suffice). Image posted below my reply to you.

As to a hoax, I am not sure of the history of Goolge and their ability or inability to play tricks with people on their Earth and Mars viewer programs. But if it is a hoax, then it would have to be something created by Google, or the companies that took the satellite photos. Here are the coordinates of said structure again so everyone can look it up on Google earth/Mars: 49'19.73"N 29 33'06.53"W Note the shadows in the image labeled as original and the second filtered original. Whatever this is, it is quite tall. I say so because of the shadow line it casts on some parts of this 'structure.'

Now the plot thickens. The user has deleted the video from his account. And his account has also mysteriously disappeared.

This is as close to corrdinates for the Viking crafts as I could find on a quick search: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/MRO/multimedia/mro-20061204-v2.html NASA's Viking Lander 2 landed on Mars on Sept. 3, 1976, in Utopia Planitia.

Unless I am doing something wrong, I cannot get the coordinates to appear on Google Mars. EDIT: Nevermind. I got it. And no...it's not near any known landers, crafts, rovers or etc. It is literally alone in the middle of no where.

They probably when out picking up trash from previous missions while they are stationed on the secret manned mission to mars. Supplies I assume are limited.

Back to looking for Primes.....and I just got this new graphics card.... : /

I'm sorry but I have to say that this is silly. Please go to the JPL site. Look up pictures of the Mars rovers from the mars surveyor satelite. You'll see tracks and a clear picture of a small rover. If this rover is about 10 feet and is clearly seem then the object has to be tiny to be that pixilated. I'd bet its just another small rock formation.

lets also take a look at the location 49' north. on earth that would be in southern canada. This is an unlikely place to put a "colony". It would be really cold on earth and freaking cold on Mars. Lets also not forget that we'd have to rely on Solar power which is substantially less on mars and by far less that far north. Remember the Phoenix probe died because it wasn't able to collect solar power. So you're looking at an uninhabital zone on Mars. Lets not forget that the Mars rovers landed near the Equator and still have trouble staying alive during the winters.

Just plain silly.

If this is a structure, who said it was made by humans or that it was put there by us? Mars was a very different place millions of years ago. This could be something ancient, not recent. And people do live in Southern Canada.
