Please understand that I'm not lecturing you, personally. We've just hit my pet peeve. Then please understand that the opposite is my pet peeve. As a society we are losing our minds. Our contributions to humanity are wrongly judged by "how it sounds." Who has contributed more to the world's health; the Red Cross or George Westinghouse? Wow. A couple points to address and I had to do a lot of editing to get down to the meat of the matter. Self interest. Yes, it is OK. The only reason why any of us do "good" is because of the feeling we get from doing "good". We truly don't do "good" just to help people. If the chemicals in our brains made us sick from helping other people, we wouldn't do it. I understand the concept of self interest being a good thing, and there's nothing wrong with it per se. There is something wrong if we attempt to put our own good above all others. Impolite to mention it in front of polite company? Depends on the company themselves. We are a collective community of people, each with our own unique views, experiences, levels of understanding, and controlling interests. Personally, my pet peeve is piqued whenever someone starts making demands of the project because of their own self interests. Mind you, I'm not making that accusation here toward anyone. I'm just laying out what my pet peeve is. In the end, does this change anything for me? No. I will still exercise my freedom of speech to argue against what I disagree with. Am I being judgemental for it? I suppose no more judgemental than those who have judged me for disliking putting self interested RAC above the project itself, even if one attempts to claim that the interests are one and the same. Bottom line is we all judge. It's how we diplomatically deal with our differences that makes us civil. |

It's a good thing I like to crunch multiple projects. My Seti work is all done and waiting for upload. Milkway is done and waiting for the server to come back. Climate prediction is waiting for the firewall to be fixed to download the next workunit. Just got a new graphics card yesterday. Starting to pump out units fast. Now most are stuck on Uploading all day.....Looking for primes now... : / |

Personally, my pet peeve is piqued whenever someone starts making demands of the project because of their own self interests. Mind you, I'm not making that accusation here toward anyone. I'm just laying out what my pet peeve is. We agree. The person in question has been a participant since May 1999 with 100% of recent RAC going to SETI@Home. If that person were a RAC-hound they could run-up more RAC by carefully choosing other projects. Their personal priorities were called into question; nobody commented about or made a demand. I was just wordily saying that our priorities are the same and I inexcusably "went off" on the word "seems." I apologize. Lately, I've been surrounded by goody-two-shoes who are quick to criticize those who do things while praising those who do little but talk a lot about friendly ideas. You know, self-congratulatory committees who are too wrapped-up in themselves to notice the blood, sweat, and tears... ...I digress (and my digressions tend to go-on a bit). If we were discussing someone who demanded something of the project with a stated or implied "or else" (as has happened around here before), or if we are generally talking about the shrillness of the outcry, then you and I agree entirely. One does need to know how to "play well with others." |

I'm like some others here that only crunch seti ... my tendency is to run deep caches so that I am not affected by these hiccups ... all boxes still happily crunching away ... when it comes back on line there is going to be an upload frenzy for some time so be prepared for the pain ... :) |

To some it matters, to some it doesn't. What's so difficult in accepting differences in what we perceive as important? [edit: I just picked the last post for quoting, not answering to it specifically] Carola ------- I'm multilingual - I can misunderstand people in several languages! |

CPDN is sort of up. It's taking a long time to get the files to download, but they are coming. I have one 3 meg file to go before I can start crunching the new work unit. It's got a backoff of 11 hours though, so I might have to jump the line and press the retry button. LOL |

I got a new graphics card to process work faster. Its a lot faster now. I could care less what my RAC is I've been using Seti@home since it came out. I lost my credit from a previous work but its not important. Results are only important and I could care less if its me or someone else. I hope we find a real signal soon. :) |

Uploads and downloads are happening here now without any extra assistance. :) for you maybe...Slavac, I, and i'm sure several others are still having to babysit our downloads...and all this, despite the fact that the cricket graph now shows steady streams of bits in and bits out... ...not that i'm complaining though - i was able to DL ~12 hours of MB work yesterday, so that'll get my host through the work day. also, i was able to get 162 AP tasks assigned to my host by the scheduler yesterday - now its just a matter of getting it all downloaded...though i'm not too worried about it, b/c 1) my host will be contacting the server throughout the day, so i suspect a good number of them will get downloaded by the time i get home from work, and 2) i'm running BOINC v6.10.60 (not the newer v6.12.26), so my server back-off times are much shorter. in other words, unlike with BOINC v6.12.26, my core client won't back off for hours at a time on the first failed server contact. |

Well I'm still on 6.10.56 here and I don't plan on upgrading until I have to. ;) Cheers. |
