heck I'm just now getting used to the quirkiness of 7. I'm not ready to even consider jumping off on another adventure in finding things MS decided to move to justify their new OS which is just a copy of their last with the crap worked out... no thanks In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. I have not tried it yet either. To me, it seems like they remove the best part of the last version when they come out with a new version of windows. For example, why on earth did they get rid of the photo editing capabilities in windows photo gallery? It was soooo convenient to just hit the “fix†button to brighten up a picture stored on your hard drive. Or does any one remember when you went to store a site in your favorites, you had all of the directories closed? For some reason when they went from XP to Vista and carried it over to windows 7 they decided to have these all open up which makes it quite difficult when you try to save a website. Now don’t even get me started on the windows live mail thing. |

From what I've seen in the video, it looks like it's catering for the mobile community, which may be a good thing in general, but I hope they still retain a "classic" type shell. |

At Computex there were showing off how it would run on ARM hardware. However I heard rumors that one of the "Applications" for mobile devices would be Desktop so you would have something along the lines of a normal PC desktop to use. Haven't had a chance to try it yet since my TechNet doesn't come with their beta program. As soon as I can get my hands on it, I'll be happy to try it out. |

Anyone tried Alpha or Beta versions yet? I don't think the beta is available to anyone but Microsoft and the trusted partners at this time. Release date is tentatively shooting for 2H of 2012 so a beta won't come around for a bit. Traveling through space at ~67,000mph! |

hehe. I just now built this computer and installed Win7. Before now I only used XP. My wife's computer has Vista, but I didn't like that OS much. I don't foresee me upgrading OS's again until my next build (years down the road, as the expense is quite high). |

Just a hunch.......... I would not be at all surprised if the Skype buyout was very intentional... Windows 8 + Skype + others (maybe Cloud?) all based on User Billable Subscriptions...... |

Anyone tried Alpha or Beta versions yet? Many analysts are being quoted as there is good and bad. The big key is Win 8 is supposed to be modular. The OS is supposed to be small enough to fit inside Smart Phones, Tablets and Desktops (inside 256 meg). The first biggest module is Touch Screen other emphasys is on Cloud Applications. Win 8 bypasses Big Business for the Desktop (Win 7 is for that, which is why they bypassed Vista). So things will get interesting. Win 8 could have a tight kernel and then you add what you want (that is if you build the machine ourself). Regards Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |

Anyone tried Alpha or Beta versions yet? I'll believe that when I see it. If the desktop/laptop version of Windows 8 is smaller than 2GB I'll be happy. 256MB no way. The portable version I see being under 256MB I mean heck Android is only 80MB on the bloat fested versions. By the time Microsoft adds in the core, then touch, then security, graphics, browser, and whatever else (Media Center) it will be WAY over 256MB. Now if the modular thing ends up working to where I can say "I just want Windows and the machine to boot, nothing else" and it ends up being really small sure. But I bet it doesn't work that way on the desktop, and even if it does the smallest install will still be a GB or more. Traveling through space at ~67,000mph! |

From a nearby (exiled) thread: Will this move the Windows system to become more useful and better, or will it become even more heavily locked-down in the name of 'competitiveness'? A good summary for "Windows 8" has been published by a leading PC publisher. (Sorry, for technical and freedoms reasons,) Look to the next post! Hopefully an artical of interest that gives a fair summary and a few concerns... Windows 8: It's the Applications, Stupid! Analysis: Nobody runs an operating system just to run an operating system -- they run them to get stuff done, and they get most of that stuff done in applications. An important part of that 'getting things done' is also reliability and ease and trust and costs and freedom... Is it make or break as the rest of the world rapidly moves on? Another interesting article. Take the time to read the 4 pages of comments...more interesting than the article itself.... TechRepublic - Win 8 |

To be honest, I am happy with my Windows 7. I don't see the need to upgrade to a new OS when the one I have is just fine. I think this is just a way for companies to get more money from people. Eventually we will be forced to upgrade because nothing will be compatible with Windows 7 or XP etc. If it's not broke, don't fix it. However I will never do the 10 year old OS on my daily driver again, XP was the last time. The way they are talking about going modular with W8 begs the question, in the future will we be able to move to a newer OS by only swapping the Core and keeping the rest?! If you mean the rest of the O/S, maybe, however, if you mean all the other MS apps like Office, it'll never happen - they'll want to keep their cashcow going for as long as possible. Also, with information gleaned this weekend I can guarantee that Win 8 will never see the daylight on my network, whereas Win 9 may do so. |
