Message 1110960 - Posted: 29 May 2011, 4:05:25 UTC

I've been able to install BOINC on two different Macs (iBook G4 and MacBook Pro) and they've both been able to connect to SETI@Home. However, when I try to connect it to my personal MacBook (2008), I can't get BOINC to even connect to the internet. I'm running OSX 10.6.7. After I try to connect to a project, I get:

"Failed to add project
An Error has occurred;
check the Event Log for details.
Click Finish to close."

And when I go look at the Even Log, it says:

"Notice from BOINC
BOINC can't access Internet - check network connection or proxy configuration."

This is odd because there isn't a firewall and I have a fast internet connection. Currently, in the lower right corner of Advanced View, it says "Connected to localhost (6.12.26)"

That's pretty much all the information I have. Any help would be appreciated.

When you say there isn’t a firewall, are you referring to an external device? Just in case: the OS has its own software firewall … sorry, I don’t know anything about “Snow Leopard”, but it may be that it takes more to disable its firewall (or to allow BOINC access) than in previous versions. OTOH the fact that BOINC Manager is able to communicate with the core client (localhost) suggests that it’s getting through at least one port, so the problem is probably elsewhere.

The exact same thing is happening to me. I have a MacBook from 2010, running OSX 10.6.7 and I get the exact same error messages. Help !!!

Yes.......my Firewall (the one that is built into Snow Leopard) is always on, and my anti-virus software is always running. I don't want to turn off my Firewall. I don't know how to fix this problem, of not being able to download blocks of data from SETI. It used to be simple, back when I started doing this in 2002, but everything (software & such), has gotten way more complicated.

My OS firewall is currently turned off. I went through and check all the settings and compared them to the other two computers, but everything looks the same. Not a huge deal, I just need to buy some RAM for the older iMac so it won't crash every few seconds, but I wanted to be able to run on my personal computer. Interesting that it's not too common of a problem.

Chris - Let me know if you find out anything.

SETI stopped working for me a long time ago, with the same error mentioned here. Error message seems misleading - get other errors when trying to attach other projects. Cannot negotiate a successful connection with any project.

I've tried reinstalling BOINC, resetting the project - everything I can think of. Not behind or running any firewall.

Been with SETI off and on since sometime in the 90s. Never a problem until forced to use BOINC.

Sorry, no bright ideas … I haven’t seen a problem like this on any of my “Panther” and “Tiger” systems. Aside from the system software, though, my BOINC versions are also older: v5.x on the G4s (I was unable to get later versions to run) and v6.6–6.10 on my G5 and the (Intel-powered) iMacs.

Oh well, doesn't seem like there is a fix to this one. It's all down to the old G4 to do the work then (boinc works fine on it).

I switched to Snow Leopard, and have the same problem. Then I saw something on the news that said SETI had gone out of business temporarily. I thought that was the reason. There must be millions and millions using Snow Leopard, the latest Mac System.

I am running Snow Leopard and am able to run BOINC with no problems whatsoever.

You do have these settings in the firewall I hope.

Have no problems with Leopard and Boinc 6.12.26. Don't know about later versions of Boinc.

And this before it tries any project site screams firewall settings are wrong.

Hi there.
Today I upgraded my iMac to Snow Leopard and when the upgrade finished I had a message that said (something like): "BOINC has no client privileges. Please reinstall BOINC. (error: 1008)"
Does any one know how to solve this or even if its possible to solve.
I run SETI, Milky Way, and AEON.
I can access my BOINC account via the BOINC website, by I guess its going to be an OS issue.
Thanks.

Well I upgraded to Lion, re-installed Bionic. Now it works. Still don't know what the issue was, my G4's never had a problem. I tried re-installing it before, as well as fiddled with every setting I could think of on the computer and the router. I'm guessing it was an issue with OSX SL.
Just happy to have it going again.

I installed Lion and upped RAM from 1gb to 4 and it worked... I'm guessing it was the OS, but no Idea how to tell. Thanks for suggestions.
