Well, new WUs are generating now, but upload server still doesn't work, so I've got 20 completed WUs and I can't download new WUs before some of previous been uploaded...

Really? I still got nth :(

If you have '> CPUs x2' ULs in the transfers overview in BOINC, BOINC don't ask for new work.

For example, QUAD-CPU -> 9 ULs and no work request.

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but what do you mean by "CPUs x2' ULs". I am new to this bonic.....i am sleeping for a long while after the seti classic :P

For example your AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+, a 2 threads CPU.

BOINC say CPU to CPU-Core /-threads, then 'CPUs x2' is: 2 x 2 = 4

'> CPUs x2':
So if your BOINC have 5 results ready for upload, but they can't go to S@h, BOINC don't ask for new work - until they are uploaded.

Thanks for your clear explainations!

But can this be solved by change the number of CPU in cc_config?

If I remember right, after work units are generated, they are then cleared through a known radio source filter to clean them up before they are actually made available?

Can someone verify that I'm not remembering something very badly here?

I imagine S@H has no use for an old dual core (two cpus, 4 cores total) tyan s2892 with 8gb ddr400 memory, can up that to maybe 12gb with memory on hand if that's a yes. BTW it's in a 4U Rack Mountable chassis. Most of it's life was spent powered off, It's been on crunching wu's since about February, other than that in a closet. Either noisy or hot, so I didn't end up using it.

If you're not using it, why would Berkeley want to use it either?

I'm very sure they don't have the rack space or time to play with obsolete equipment. They may continue to use their big iron kit until it runs way past obsolescence, but that's only because of the trade-off between running well but slow vs cost of rearranging things.

Look up the specs for their current servers for comparison.

If the only problem is that it is too noisy, try looking at installing quieter fans? Or go water cooled?

Recycle your case with some new insides? You could make a mini-supercomputer beast with a new motherboard, modern multi-core CPU, and multiple GPUs for crunching!

s@h are always looking for donations, but only if the parts can fit. Otherwise, there's other useful ways to donate. Still, thanks for the thought/offer.

Happy fast crunchin',
Martin

You are welcome.

I don't know. I never tested it.

But if it would work, it could be only a temporary work around.
And only for PCs with low RAC.

If you set for example 12 CPUs, 12 WUs would start to calculate.
I don't know the max value.
Maybe BOINC have a limit, for to prevent abuse.

This function is for testing.

For to bridge the next unplanned outage, you should increase the WU cache in the calculation settings.

Or, preferably, attach to one or more additional BOINC projects.

Why does this feature exist? There must be a reason for it. It's not a big deal, I'm just curious :-)

Richard my best friend..
Oh yes, the best would be to detach from S@h and attach to all other BOINC projects.. - if you want to support primary S@h.

Only making the suggestion as a backup for times of struggle, such as the present. I'd be perfectly happy to encourage people to join SETI when SETI needs, and can support, the additional processing power. But we are here to help SETI with their needs for computing power, not the other way round.

Actually I do use it, it produces ~15,000 Credits/Day. It has good heatsinks/fans in it, hence the noise. Not a problem in a lab environment, Like S@H. I have "upgraded" it, hence the query to S@H staff as, as I imagine they are quite capable of determining what they mey/may not need in the lab. I'm using Lanboy Air cases for my new builds for extra cooling so don't even need the case, which is more for a Lab. The system is still quite serviceable, just not modern. Can be upgraded to 16GB Memory, though limited to DDR2-400/ECC, I'd probably keep it if the second PCI-E slot were 16x to handle a second cuda card. Second PCI-E slot is 16x size but only wired 4x, which has no bearing in a lab environment, where it would be doing CPU work and the 2MB onboard video is fine for initial configuration. Water cooling done right, is expensive and takes time. And can be a real disaster in a lab environment. Just looking at the servers on the server status page, the above system matches very closely with several of their current servers. Theirs may be more modern opterons (mine is dual opteron 275, 2.2GHz). The more modern cores may be up to 50% faster per core, but some systems only have two cores. I just don't know what they really need, so just querying to get an idea. I might could throw them a more modern system together, or some TB SATA drives.

For S@H CUDA processing, 4x electrical would be quite adequate. There isn't a huge amount of data being transferred back and forth. You might try just shifting the GTX 275 into that other slot to characterize how much impact the reduced number of channels has.

I do know that 2 or 3 years ago they were looking for two web servers, and the Thinman donation filled one of those niches. Your system might be welcome as the other, or fill a similar function. Some more detail about the chassis configuration and PSU[s] would make sense since their closet has both space and power limitations.

Ha, I have tested that, it didn't work at all. And finally, I turn to formatting the pc and reinstall everything for better performance of my machine!!!!! Thanks through!

Putting the 275 into that slot causes the system not to post.

If your cache is full to a certain point (example: You won't finish all WUs on time if more work is downloaded), it will not download any work. I usually wait until my cache is a bit low before I try to get more work. If that's not the case, restart BOINC, run benchmarks and hope for more WUs! Otherwise it could be the server load that's stopping you. With everyone scrambling to upload, report and download, it might take more than a few tries to get more work.
