Message 1109649 - Posted: 25 May 2011, 15:50:16 UTC

Hello everyone,

Just downloaded BOINC for seti, everthing seems fine - computing, GPU and network all enabled, but i cannot download any project, seems to constantly defer? possibly a firewall issue? i know there's probably another forum and many posts on this issue, but any help/advice woiuld be appreciated.

Thanks Lee H.

1) Restart BOINC
(and congratulations you spelled "BOINC" correctly :) Many New members spell it funny way: bionic, bionc, bonic, ...)

2) Go to menu Advanced -> Event Log, copy the first 30-40 lines of messages and post them here.
(they can give many clues to what is or is not wrong)

(but "cannot download any project" have to be rephrased as "cannot download any task")

And look at the green on this graph:
http://fragment1.berkeley.edu/newcricket/grapher.cgi?target=%2Frouter-interfaces%2Finr-250%2Fgigabitethernet2_3;view=Octets

It is showing that for a period of 14 hours SETI downloads were disabled for everybody for some reason.
It is not only you, you just happen to choose a bad time to attach to SETI.

But now the green is raising up :)

Then use this link:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_classic_link.php

(after that your Join date will not be 25 May 11 but the original date 10 years ago)

(the e-mail address of the Classic account does not need to be active)

I am having a weird issue I can download for approx 10 sec then it slowly falls off to 2Kbps and then goes into defered. I am sure it will finish sooner or later, The main reason I repliaed was to thank you for the Link to classic accounts and how to incorperate them as I too started SETI@HOME back in 2002 so it is nice to see my stats added to my new account.
I know it seems like not much work was done back then but I actually had 2 computers running and I tried to leave them on 24/7 of course I was using a 1.3Ghz Processor and I think 1 Gig ram back then lol
Now I am sporting a i7 2630QM quad and 16 Gb 1333Mhz DDR3 I think the speed of ram was 400Mhz back then

Since your computer is now attached and has plenty work units, I guess the problem has sorted out itself. :-)

And welcome to SETI@home and the forum.

That didn't answer my question. The screen saver that I have still says No Tasks Running, and under projects it consistently says Connection Deferred.

That are two questions. And since you had given no update, I just guessed from the available data.

For question one, set
Suspend work when non-BOINC CPU usage is above --- %
0 means no restriction
Enforced by version 6.10.30+
to zero in your Computing preferences. If you are using local preferences, make the change there.

For question two, just be patient. Obviously, your client can connect to the server, otherwise it wouldn't have downloaded the tasks.

For question two, just be patient. Obviously, your client can connect to the server, otherwise it wouldn't have downloaded the tasks.

There is a problem in your logic here. And that is that the database will sign you up with work and show that in your account that you have been assigned that work, but that doesn't mean you have downloaded it yet...

E.g., this task of mine will show to all the world as "In progress", but it isn't in on my system yet, it's still downloading. It has been downloading for close to 18 hours now. With the last she wrote:

So don't think that while it says for Brittany that she has all that work in progress, that she actually also has that work downloaded.

Seeing the Cricket network graph, we're not out of the woods yet. Full bandwidth is still being used, so lots of people in similar situations, I bet.

Perhaps not all, but I have downloaded a task at 13 Jul 2011 | 2:59:57 UTC with only two retries. I can't believe that all 26 of Brittany's tasks are still pending in download when they have begun downloading starting at 13 Jul 2011 | 4:30:20 UTC.

[edit]And we wouldn't be forced to guess if Brittany not only said that it's still not working but would tell us the status of her Tasks tab or give us new log excerpts with corresponding error messages.[/edit]

Gruß,
Gundolf

I wouldn't be so sure.. if downloading one task is giving this much trouble, I don't want to know what 26 of them do. ;-)

My computer has been working all night and all day and I still have no credits. How is this possible?

Once you return work, it must be compared against a quorum partner (a.k.a. "wingman") to verify the accuracy of the results. Once the copies match sufficiently, then credit is granted.

I'm not updating your points. The process is completely automated.

The servers split data into chunks of work called "workunits". These workunits are sent out to at least two people to be analyzed or "crunched", while the results are stored in a file. Once you have gone through the entire workunit, you upload the result to the server.

If you return your work before the other person has, you have to wait until they return their copy of the same workunit. If you return your copy after they have, then the two results are compared, and if similar, credits are awarded.

If the results are not similar enough, or if one of you don't return the workunit before the deadline, then a third copy of the same workunit is generated and automatically sent out to another person and the process continues until either a match is found for the result, or 10 re-sends, whichever comes first.

All of this is handled through automated scripts. No human intervention is performed except in extremely rare circumstances.
