	All for the sake of 'culture', religion, and greed: India's unwanted girls India's 2011 census shows a serious decline in the number of girls under the age of seven - activists fear eight million female foetuses may have been aborted in the past decade. ... ... Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described female foeticide and infanticide as a "national shame" and called for a "crusade" to save girl babies. But Sabu George, India's best-known campaigner on the issue, says the government has so far shown little determination to stop the practices. ... This comment is rather apt: Changing abortion laws/outlawing abortion won't matter a jot here. There needs to be serious investigation into the on-going practice of dowry exchange and strong education on the role of women and their rights in Indian society. In order for this situation to change it would require massive cultural upheaval. Call me cynical, but can a country really change it's entire cultural view of women? So how do we change the world for the better? Southern India has a very good example that can be followed where good and freely available education equally for everyone, girls aswel as boys, has greatly helped to stabilise the population in various ways. 	Is it me, or is a country that is doing this preparing itself for a massive war in a couple of decades? No, I don't think so. It is just the Indian culture of today. "They didn't want girls in the family. They wanted boys so they could get fat dowries," she says. India outlawed dowries in 1961, but the practice remains rampant and the value of dowries is constantly growing, affecting rich and poor alike. There's no difference between girls and boys. But here they think differently. There's no happiness when a girl is born. They say the son will carry forward our lineage, but the daughter will get married and go off to another family.

Just wondering what happens when all those boys can't find wives and what their reaction may be. India isn't the only country where there is a large sex ratio imbalance either. ____________

	I'll tell you a very sad story. A few years ago I had a young bright Indian girl in my IT class. Romped through all the work. She told me that back in India she had won a scholarship to train as a doctor, but a marriage had been arranged for her by her parents. The prospective husband lived in the UK and his family said that they were not prepared to wait 5 years while she qualified, so unless she came to the UK fairly quickly, the marriage was off and they'd look for someone else. So her parents sent her over. I think she was pretty much just married when I first knew her. I happened to meet her a year later in the town and she was obviously quite pregnant. I said well, that was quick, I guess congratulations are in order. She looked at me with sad eyes and said, she didn't have much choice in the matter. It all goes on over here not just over there......

	Theoretically, for each birth, P(B) = 1/2 and P(G) = 1/2. I think you will find empirically, the percentages of women is somewhere between 50 and 51 percent. The percentage of men is below 50%, but not below 49%. Now multiply by a number between 6 billion and 7 billion. (To avoid confusion in the UK, that's 6 or 7 followed by two sets of three zeros.) By no means, though, does this justify misognystic behaviors/policies.

In the cold misogynist cruelty of India (and other anti-women countries/states/cultures/religions), perhaps 'market forces' might take over from Darwin to increase their 'value' due to their scarcity... Time for an India women's movement? Set up refuges where women can safely withdraw their services until they do gain due respect? Or how many more generations will there be for continued misogynist ignorance? We can all whinge on these forums, but what to do about it? Anyone heard anything of Sakineh for a while?...
