DO YOU HAVE TURNED ON YOUR SETI SOFTWARE THE WHOLE DAY?

Hello all, I would like to know if you people use your Seti@home software the whole day in your computer? is it good to leave it on the whole day? I would like to know what are the best ways to use it. And do you have hopes that in the future somebody will catch a signal from extraterrestrials?

that being said you don't have to run your PC 27/7 if it makes you uncomfortable about the electric bill. I haven't seen a major increase in my bill and I have 5 running 24/7 I estimate it uses less than $10 per PC per month. If thats to expensive then just run Seti when your computer is on. There is no rule that states you have to go nuts like a few of us and run a 4 GPU hexcore CPU rig. Whatever you are willing to do is enough.

You never know, the cosmos is a big place, afterall, life is based on carbon and that element is common in the universe. Be optimistic, perhaps somewhere out there in another planet, beings have a Seti@Home version and wonder the same thing, are we alone in the universe?

I have a dual core HP pentium system. I leave it on all the time crunching SETI, but I have it set to run the CPU no more than 85% to avoid overheating.

I have only been back in the program a few days. When I left there was a green radio dish in the tray. Seems that is gone now.

I will have to see how my computer holds up at this level. I never noticed the fan running prior to running SETI. Now it runs all the time.

Still, the electricity should not be all that much. I turn the monitor off when I am not using the computer. And I don't run the screen saver. That uses up cycles.

I always leave it on when I'm not using other resource intensive programs. But last night I forgot to turn it off before running Civilization V, but it ran normally, and I was pleasantly surprised.

BOINC is setup to run at the lowest priority possible. It backs off on processing so that other things can run. I only notice a minimal amount of lag when I play newer FPS games

I do my "crunching" with a 2G Intel 2 core iMac. Sometimes, the computer runs 24 hrs.. but sometimes I put it in to sleep mode overnight. In that case, the machine is running at least 16 hrs a day. When I was working (now retired), we had 3 Mac workstations, which I set up to run SETI in the background. But, since I'm no longer in the office, those machines are no longer running SETI.. which is a shame, because the machines are powered up 24/7, and at certain times of the year when business gets slow, the machines are just idling... doing nothing. They could certainly crunch SETI data.

I had this machine (Voyager) built specifically for projects like Seti@Home. I'll get upgrades when money becomes available (i.e. memory, GPU, etc). Voyager runs 24/7 at this point with the CPU fan manually set to max speed.

I would manually set the GPU fan to 60-65% as well just to keep the heat down

My Seti@home software runs all the time when I am away from my computerand it stays on all the time except during intense electrical storms. This has been going on for about 15 years.
