My starter was a 486DX2/66 with, if I remember correctly, 1 MB of RAM. First WUs were taking an average 85 hours to crunch. Are you sure it only had 1MB of RAM? SETI@Home Classic required at least 8MB of RAM per workunit. |

Congrats everyone. I lack about 3 months still! But I snuck into the party early as usual. My first Seti machine crunching was a Pentium 66 with 8MB of ram and a massive 1.2GB HD. Not a bad machine in the day, ancient as all heck now though. At the $2800 cost of that machine then I could build 2 really decent machines now! Traveling through space at ~67,000mph! |

I just sent my original SETI cruncher off to be recycled :( An AMD K6-2 368Mhz with 128MB RAM and a huge 10GB hard drive. Still in full working order but just taking up space. Brian. |

Returned my first workunit on April 8th 1999. Only got five units done in the whole year. Processor was an AMD K6, an earlier incarnation of this machine http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=4805488 |

Started crunching SETI as soon as I found it. Think my first machine was an old 486/66. Finally went over 10,000 wu's under the old system just before BOINC started. |

At my age I can't remember details that far back... but it may have been a Compaq 'Protable', 9" CRT [an amber one I got from the HeathKit store] and dual floppys. Since then I have relocated eight times in the US and three times in the Philippines. I have had a busy life over those twelve years. Perhaps I'll survive, against the statistical odds, for another twelve years... Hope to see all of you then... ;-) |

Wow - didn't even realize that there was a thread tracking this until I ran across it looking for something else. Too bad I'm still using the same computer I've had for I think 6-7 years. My credit was impressive about 5 years ago. Now that many have GPUs helping (and most certainly have faster CPUs than I) I'm getting further and further behind. But hey, every bit helps - right? Started on a Pentium Pro - 200, overclocked to 233. Don't recall how much RAM it had, but I'm guessing 32M because I THINK it had 4 x 8M sticks. Next was a PIII-450 that I sent away to have the plastic cover taken off and had 3x Peltier coolers added to it by the now defunct Step Thermodynamics. Easily overclocked to 558, was hoping for 600 but was not stable 100% of the time at that speed. Still have that on my desk as a paperweight too. Currently running a single core Athlon 3000+ (1.8 GHz). Slowly crunches a unit in about 5-8 hours or a Astropulse unit in about 90 hours. |

Just checking in … I observe that of the 344 users that signed up twelve years ago today, about 70 are still crunching. |

Ooops, it slipped by: 15 May 1999. But there were some lapses in there. First rig was either a Micron P133, or more likely a Micron P200. Was still running a few old dos apps on the latter until about a year ago. T&L |

Guess I should check in - late as usual. I also had some lapses, and for most of these years, I only ran the computer a hour or so a day to check mail, etc. after work. Just checking in … I observe that of the 344 users that signed up twelve years ago today, about 70 are still crunching. One place to get that info is at BOINC All Project Stats - use the link on your account page so you will get there with your CPID instead of mine. There's a link next to your "First seen on Date" that will show all the users that joined that date. Sort the list by RAC to see how many are active. Fortunately, you don't have to count them at this site. Another Fred Support SETI@home when you search the Web with GoodSearch or shop online with GoodShop. |

I only go back to 2002, but there was a gap in the middle. |
