The SETI screensaver starts after 5 minutes of inactivity which it should. After it processes data for 5 minutes the BOINC screensaver comes on and tells me, "Computing Suspended While Computer Not In Use."

Say what? NOT in use? That just doesn't make sense. Can someone point me to a setting I can change that will allow this thing to work all the time I'm not using the computer? I've battled this thing for two days and I'm about ready to give up.

Look at your Computing preferences:
Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last --- minutes
Needed to enter low-power mode on some computers

(emphasis by me)

If your value is not zero (or ---) set it so - and check also your local preferences, as I'm not sure if newer versions of BOINC manager show that option too.

Thank you for your prompt reply to a newbie. That setting indeed was at 5 minutes which I changed to 720 minutes. I'll see what happens.

I still think that setting is counter productive. If the computer is idle (no keyboard or mouse activity) for X minutes then it starts processing data. If the computer is still idle after a specified time the computer is still idle and should remain processing data right? I'm still scratching my head over this one.

If it helps, the BIONIC manager I got does not have that setting in Preferences.

You can set it to 0 [zero] and it will continue to process without interruption.

But for people who want their computer to go into low power standby, they need this option. The computer cannot enter a low power state while intensive processing is happening.

If it helps, the BIONIC manager I got does not have that setting in Preferences.

I don't know what's so BIONIC about BOINC! ;-)

You got me on that one. My only excuse is that my fingers were typing faster than my feeble brain was working.

I will try a setting of zero since the 720 minute setting made no difference at all.

Folks I'm really trying here but I'm getting frustrated. This should not be this difficult. I'm willing to donate some computer time to this project as I feel it's worthy of my time. I can usually devote 12 hours or so a day to the project as I only reboot this machine about once a week. I'm running an Intel Dual CPU @2.4GHz using Win XP Pro with 2GB of RAM. That's not the fastest by any means but could make a difference in the overall scheme of things. I just need to get the stoopid thang (my redneck spelling) to keep on crunching data.

What if you leave the setting blank instead of at zero?

I agree that it shouldn't be so difficult, and I proffer that it isn't difficult for most people. I wish that allayed your frustration but I know it won't.

(long standing bug) There are some computers for which using the settings for detecting an active keyboard and mouse conflict with the screen saver (which is not needed for actual computation.) The solutions are to turn off one or the other. (or if you have any debugging skills, try to figure out what the problem actually is and submit a fix).
