At 23:00UTC from my location all you'd have seen was the glare of a street light in the fog :-(

So someone somewhere must have seen a really good one last night.

That was not a very bright show last night. I am waiting for a better night. I had the shutter open for eight seconds on that one; I have seen some that looked very good at two and three seconds.

Try blocking out some of the local lights for about half the exposure time. It will take a bit of practice. This will increase the apparent brightness of the sky with respect to the town lights.

Use a bit of card with a torn edge held a few inches in front of the lens, slowly raise it up so it covers the brightest street light then lower it out of shot.

Thank you I was going to try to make a cone out of bristle board so I could hold it over the lens. Plus there is a much better place to stand at the back of my place.

We are heading for a bright, clear night, so what are the odds on there not being an Aurora visible in this neck of the woods...

Cokin do a range of filter lens adapters that take split-screen filters.
One type of filter you can fit can be rotated so half the image coming
through the lens is blanked out.

I've seen those, very good for double exposure shots, but for what Ian is looking at he needs the foreground to complete the picture hence selectively masking out areas works a better, and those Cokin filters are quite expensive (or at least were last time I bought any)

It is looking like there will be a bit of a show tonight. Long Sufferin’ Marie surprised me with a better camera than the Nikon; she went down yesterday and got a Cannon rebel T3. With this one I have more options for night photography. Now it is Happy birthday, and Merry Christmas to me.

No aurora yet, but we do have a nice pix of the Moon with Jupeter.

The new camera works swell, looks like Long Sufferin' Marie hit the gift nail right on the head.

I remember seeing the Aurora Australis in 1955 when it was visible from Sydney (33deg South). I was 4 years old and the image is burnt into my brain. I'd love to see another one but there hasn't been one visible on the mainland of Australia since.
