do you actually get to listen to the signal that you're given, or have i completely missed something?

No, there is no sound with the application, and there never has been an official one.

Back in the days of SETI Classic, someone had made a program that converted the workunit data files to audio, but this program doesn't work with the new SETI@Home Enhanced MultiBeam workunits that are handed out.
