Message 1098281 - Posted: 17 Apr 2011, 1:58:59 UTC

Hey guys i have multiple PCs that run BOINC. Ive setup separate profiles for them which is sort of working. The one problem is that both PCs have CUDA enabled GPU (PC1- 2x GTX280, PC2- 8400GS).
With PC2 i want to disable BOINC using the 8400GS which ive done though the cc_config file but its still downloading CUDA work for the card to do. Ive even disabled the CUDA driver function in the Nvidia control Panel. But BOINC is still detecting a CUDA card and downloading work.
Is the another config file or cmd i can use to make BOINC not download GPU work?

In which directory are you putting cc_config?

Ive placed it in Doc&Settings>All Users>App Data>BOINC.
When i load the file through the BOINC manager it says "No useable GPUs".

This seems to be the computer in question. Indeed, BOINC does not report any GPUs on that computer, and when I was looking through your list of tasks, I saw no GPU workunits.

What is leading you to believe that it is downloading work for the GPU?

Interesting. I didn't see those there when I looked last time.

Can you provide the first 30 lines from the Messages tab after a clean start of BOINC? This might clue us in as to what's going on.

It seems to be like the answer here is to set up two different preference venues in your online preferences (which means you'd have to stop using your local preferences by clearing them).

Put the one system in the default preferences and allow the GPU to be used. Put the other system that you do not want it using the GPU into a different preference set, such as Home, Work, or School, and disable using the GPU for that preference set.

Since "Use NVIDIA GPU" preference is only on web "SETI@home preferences"
there is NO need to clear the local (in BOINC Manager) preferences.

SETI@home preferences:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=project

Set "Use NVIDIA GPU" to NO (un-mark the check-box) in the venue (home, school, work) where you will put the "Computer 5896112"
(e.g. click "Add separate preferences for school")

Your computers:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/hosts_user.php

("Location" column shows the "venue")

Go to the "Details" of "ID: 5896112"
and at the bottom of page choose the "Location" (e.g. "school") and [Update]

("Location" == "venue")

Since the local preferences override the web preferences, wouldn't he need to clear the local preferences so he can start using the web-based preferences again?

Nope, the local preferences only override the global online preferences, not the project- or community specific ones.

Actually, it can be done setting by setting. The local preferences are in global_preferences_override.xml. If the setting is not in there, it comes from global_preferences.xml that comes from the web preferences from the last project to update the web preferences. If it is not in the global_preferences file, the default is used.

The order of operations is actually: Set everything to defaults. Read the global_preferences file and set whatever preferences are in that file. Read the global_preferences_override file and set whatever preferences are in that file.

This means that if the UI does not have a setting for something, it comes from the web. If it did not come from the web, a default is used. This allows backwards compatibility with projects that have not updated to the latest code.
