I just upgraded to BOINC 6.10.60. I have a system that is on intermittently, due to being off grid, so I only want to run a couple of tasks. I set the download max for .5 MB every 7 days but the thing started downloading 20+ tasks with report dates that I could never meet. I aborted them all and it went and grabbed 20+ more. At this point I can only shut it down as I cannot meet the expectations of the project unless I can restrict the number of tasks I have on hand. Help!

First, you don't need a connection to crunch.

Second, just download the work and do what work you can. It will settle down eventually.

As John said, you don't have to be connected to the internet to crunch. You only need to be connected to the internet to download new work and report finished work.

SETI@Home isn't technically a "grid". It's actually "distributed computing" because it simply distributes chunks of work to the hosts that have joined the project. "Grid" computing means that every client is interconnected with each other through an elaborate network to utilize their combined power - and this is not how SETI@Home works.

Also as John said, you should let the workunits go. If you power down your machine often, BOINC will learn this and download less eventually. Remember, you do not have to be online to process the tasks. If you have your computer on but are not connected to the internet, you can still contribute CPU time in the background while you use your computer.

I believe he's referring to not being connected to the public electricity infrastructure.

Even if that interpretation is true, the second part of my reply corresponds with that. If he turns off his computer (takes it off the power grid), BOINC will learn that and request less work in the future.
